Elias was born in the fields in Nebraska to a traveling physician and a seasoned translator.
Jacob Wolford started his career as a field doctor in the Mexican-American war. After the war was over, he tried to return to his old life in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, but a comfortable, quiet just didn’t suit him anymore. And neither did his fiancée... So, being the free spirit he was, he left his bride-to-be and brother with a letter telling them that he’d left to find adventure and out West, offer his services to travelers and caravans as an experienced physician. It was through these exploits that Jacob met Elias’s mother...
Black Eagle, an exiled Sioux, came aboard the caravan to work as a translator and mercenary. She was a shrewd businesswoman and a legend at gambling. Like Jacob, she traveled with merchants and negotiated with other tribes on the caravan’s behalf - though no one knew she was a woman until she was forced to have Jacob treat her. Over time, Black Eagle (or Beck as Jacob christened her) grew to trust Jacob. After the caravan reached their destination and made to go their separate ways, they make a pact: if fate allowed their paths cross again, Beck would agree to marry Jacob.
Two years later, they met again in Arizona and fulfilled their promise to one another, having Elias soon after. For the sake of their infant son, Jacob and Beck opened a small clinic and general store in a fledgling town in Nebraska territory. There, the couple lived a modest but comfortable life for their little family where Jacob didn't feel trapped in one place and Beck finally had a place to call home.
Despite the couple's apparent happiness and mutual love for their son, Beck seemed to grow more uneasy they long they stood in the town. One night, when Elias was seven he found his mother preparing a horse to leave town. Black Eagle explains that she has to go somewhere far away and doesn't know when she'll be back. The child asks if he and father can come with her then, but Beck tells him that she needs to go alone. She makes Elias promise not to follow her no matter how long she takes, leaving him her pendant.
As far as the town knew, she left her family without saying a word.
