  BACKSTORY
  
  For most of her life Antimony was a normal little girl. She loved spending time with her friends and family. Watching movies, listening to music, and was just starting to discover boys. Her life was turned upside down not by the arrival of the apocalypse, but by the cancer diagnosis for her mother the year before. The disease was not caught early enough and the prognosis was terminal within a couple years. Antimony’s father was completely devastated. He immediately stopped publishing his books and set out to give his wife and daughter as much time together as humanly possible.
  Already living in a small town he sold their home and bought an old RV. Antimony’s mother Lily had always wanted to backpack Europe and the United States but had never been able to escape the small town where she grew up. So now that was exactly what they did. In order to give Lily the most time outdoors possible Antimony’s father Justin learned everything he could about becoming completely self sufficient. Investing in solar power and other sustainable skills he taught them to Antimony in order to learn them faster himself.
  For her part Antimony was sad to leave her friends and school but the time spend with her parents was a dream. She proved to be a fast learner and took to the homeschooling Lily insisted she be offered. Antimony grew to love the sights and the feel of being out of doors.
  The family didn’t even learn of the outbreak until it had been happening for several weeks. Some desperate people fleeing a city invaded their campsite before being chased off. From there the dream became darker. Resembling a nightmare at times. Where before time was spent learning about plants and animals now she was being taught to handle firearms and craft arrows.
  The family made their way back to the small town they started from as best as they could. Sticking to forgotten roads and trails. Stealing fuel and anything else they could.
  They didn’t manage to make it home before Lily passed. The lack of advanced medication and the strain of the recent events took their toll. Justin and Antimony buried her and abandoned the RV. They spent the next several years keeping away from any people or cities. They became experts at living off the land and at scrounging for supplies overlooked by others. As the time went by Antimony forgot most of what life had been like before and adapted to the new reality. Justin was a different man than he had been. Quieter. More intense. But the knack for long term and broad thinking that made his books such a success proved to be invaluable now. He prepared Antimony as best he could for the time when he would be gone with rules, lists, and constant drills of as many varied scenarios that he could come up with.
  In the end it wasn’t raiders or ghouls or the harsh environment that left Antimony alone. It was simple random chance. A heart attack just as the leaves changed colors. It likely would have happened whether or not the world had ended. A few days caring for Justin and then he was gone. Now Antimony steps into the world alone. She has survived her first winter and is trying to make peace with what she has lost and with what remains in store.
