  • The Union of Three

    How the three races above were joined into a single race of creatures is unusual indeed. The creation of the Vespire was orchestrated by the rogue Yog-Sol Escarpus. Desiring more power and a way to keep the vestiges of his human emotions, Escarpus began his enterprise with one assistant, the human Seth.

    Being a gifted Yog-Sol, Escarpus was able to capture the shadow beasts and keep them weak with moderate exposure to light. Seth was assigned with capturing other Xani, such as Jol-Vack, Gaglites (hybrid), Tellirians (hybrid), Burusha, and, finally, Tessromir (hybrids). All of the others failed, until Seth, trying to capture a Tessromir, was bitten. As he weakly carried himself back to Escarpus layer, the Yog-Sol saw the possibilities. With a young Tessromir, a young Xani who is still not wholly made, he could push the boundaries of hybridization.

    Seth was forced into a cage with a bound shadow beast, which, on instinct, devoured him. When Escarpus attempted The Unbinding, the Yog-Sol ritual of siring, on the shadow beast, the creature dissolved into the darkness. However, Seth emerged from its womb and sponged up the energy. While unstable from his creation (since he was not any one of the creatures), Seth fled the facility using the instinctive and erratic shadow abilities he had acquired, but not before his pain allowed him to use the darkness outside to envelope the Laboratory, effectively sealing Escarpus away in the Shadow Realm.

    Seth did not live long. He was caught between three different creatures. Deciding to continue the experiment, Seth tried various ways to sire another like him. He could not perform The Unbinding, and so, on a young woman named Nessity Nurell Gratiana (later, Nessity Vespire-Wolfbane), he performed the Tessromir siring, biting and infecting her.

    It is from Nessitys strain that the contemporary image of the Vespertine Xani emerged.

  • The Creators

    The make-up of a Vespertine Xani is rooted in the union of three different creatures: The Yog-Sol, a shadow beast, and Tessromir Xani.

    The Yog-Sol: a member of the Father Races, or the Xanic Foundation Trinity. This race of Xani descends from Yegrento, a sorcerer who was contaminated by the Xekanni, a primitive Xani created in a freak accident of spell weaving (along with the other two Father Races). Yog-Sol are immensely gifted in all things pertaining to the arcane. They feel the Kiz Nakinda, the building blocks of reality which make the use of magic and sorcery possible.

    When one is made a Yog-Sol through a process called The Unbinding, the Kiz Nakinda which make up the physical and spiritual anatomy of the individual become keenly identifiable. In laymans terms, they can sense and feel the vibration and connection of the energies comprising their being. This innate ability to sense and feel the Kiz Nakinda provides the Yog-Sol with masterful control over magical forces. A Yog-Sols profound manipulation opens up avenues of otherwise impossible deeds.

    However, these powers come with a hefty price. For one, a Yog-Sol loses the grasp of emotion. They become more progressively apathetic and disconnected from the world around them. By the time the Yog-Sol has reached the age of three thousand years, or sometimes younger, depending on their willingness, their disconnection becomes physical and they disintegrate their physical form to become one with the Kiz Nakinda (think, becoming One with the Force).

    The Yog-Sol, in addition, does not drink blood. They are life-force Xani, meaning they will absorb the energy of their prey (similar to psychic Xani).

    As a Yog-Sol ages, their skin becomes luminescent white, their eyes become solid white on white, and they bald. They gain the ability to temporarily unbind their bodies from one plane and attach themselves to the astral world.

    The Shadow Beast: a rare creature indeed. Shadow beasts are denizens of the mysterious Shadow Realm. They emerge only to drag hapless victims into the Darkness. What they eat or why they do this is virtually unknown. The main theory is, the Shadow Realm needs to feed on life to survive, as a living entity. This would imply the shadow beasts are more than creatures that inhabit the Shadow Realm, but extensions of the Shadow Realm itself.

    Among their powers is natural grace in shadow movement. The power called shadow stepping comes with ease to them, allowing them to journey miles in mere seconds. While most sorcerers and other entities need to locate Shadow Aberrations, or windows, doors, etc, that offers greater access to the Shadow Realm, a shadow beast may exploit any shadow for travel. However, the shadow they use as a vehicle for travel must be proportionate to their body mass.

    For the few who have seen them, the shadow beasts are great, sleek black masses, often standing four feet at the haunches, with large, gaping maws, and smoldering eyes. They do not seem to have any actual teeth, but can bind an individual within their body for transport to the Shadow Realm. To hear the bark or cry of a shadow beast causes temporary blindness and in some cases hysteria.

    The Tessromir: a hybrid Xani. This being came into existence when a Jol-Vack (fundamentally existing in a great majority of hybrids) was magically experimented on by the sorcerer Luciender. Luciender tried to temper the Jol-Vackian lunacy (think, psychosis) by combining it on a genetic level with more human energy. This means the Tessromir is, at its core, a half-Xani and half-Human creature.

    While they do not have the amorphous abilities of the Jol-Vack, a Tessromir is extraordinarily powerful and resilient to seemingly unimaginable depths of pain. They experience the Blood Lust of their Jol-Vack ancestors, meaning they must put forth the effort to restrict their consumption or lose control. Tessromir also brought the essence of animal magnetism to the Xani. Prior to, the Xani did not, typically, use sex appeal to attract their prey. It was a hunt, similar to one tracking boar. However, the Tessromir introduced the attraction of their prey, bringing them willingly into their clutches.
    This is in part due to their wild energy bequeathed by the Jol-Vack and the human sensuality and grasp of beauty and physical stimulation.

    Furthermore, the Tessromir are among the most unified Xani, often creating multiple covens or Houses which are inter-connected. This is most likely due to their human halves, the need to colonize and create societies within themselves.

    A Tessromir experiences few changes as they age. Perhaps they become more attractive, in the sense of lighter skin, the ability to endure the sun to a greater degree as they age, a growth in strength, etc. But, in general, the Tessromir do not physically alter very much throughout their existence.

    The Tessromir create more of their kind by biting the victim, transferring the Xani infection through their saliva, very similar to rabies.

    They are also noted as one of the few Xanic breeds able to reproduce children through sexual intercourse.

  • The Vespire

    Having seen the three races which, when unified, yield the Vespertine Xani, we can designate the root cause of a few of their skills, afflictions, and idiosyncrasies.

    To begin, the Vespertine Xani is the only known breed able to manipulate shadows as weapons innately. To date, even the Yog-Sol cannot perform this feet as if extending their arm (the equivalent for a Vespertine Xani). This grants them incredible feats, particularly as they age. Even a young Vespire, however, may travel a limited distance through the shadows. Many times, though, the freshly made will still require Shadow Aberrations until their body has acclimated to the transformation and can synchronize with the pulse of the Shadow Realm.

    The Vespires are also gifted sorcerers and sorceresses. While they do not show brilliant aptitude in all forms of magic, they are at least capable of learning and excelling in these studies. This, however, does not come as a natural talent, like the shadow manipulation.

    Vespires have improved their Tessromir inheritance of animal magnetism. Their fangs, upon biting, release aphrodisiac venom, numbing their prey to the pain of being fed from and helping their blood pump quicker due to the arousal, as well making them more compliant.

    Like the Yog-Sol and Tessromir, they become more light skinned and otherworldly as they age. Their features become unusually bright as well (almost glowing; red hair may actually seem to glow like fire because of the vibrancy). Also like their Tessromir parent, their saliva is possessed of profound healing abilities on human skin. A bite, rubbed with spit, can heal quickly into scarcely noticeable scars.

    What the Vespire must contend with is succumbing to their desires. The Jol-Vack are natural gluttons of flesh and blood and slaves to their whims. This becomes apparent for the Vespire when feeding. They may be possessed by wild lust (the feeling of blood, of power over their prey, etc, creates a potent stimulant in their bodies). This can result in finding another victim to rape, intercourse with the current victim, blood frenzy (wildly killing more people in hunger), or temporary insanity. For the more willful Vespire, this emotion / feeling can be meditated away with concentration. Typically, only the older Vespires can manage this. This, though, is mostly a mental result if a Vespire were to independently drink blood, from a glass or other vessel, they would not experience anything except the warm, fuzzy feeling in their stomachs. The actual act of dominating and controlling prey incites the above condition.

    Like most Xani, a Vespire has minor psychic abilities, such as telepathy. They cannot, however, gain enough power to psychically dominate another persons mind. They are able to perform minor acts of telekinesis (such as hovering cups, pulling levels, etc) within a certain distance and size.

    Vespire are also able to sexually reproduce children. Unlike the Tessromir, who can simply engage in sex and have children, a Vespire must gorge on blood in order to bring life back into the section of their anatomy. For a male to produce semen, he will have to overfeed (or be in the heat of the Feeding Frenzy). This is the same for females, if they desire to become pregnant. The female, however, must continue to overfeed during the duration of her pregnancy, otherwise her womb will wither and the child will die.

    The children of Vespires will continue to age and feed as normal humans until they hit a 2nd stage of puberty. At this point, commonly in the ages of of 20-25, the recessive gene of the Vespire will grow and dominate the blood cells as is normal when one is being sired. A being cannot be born a Xani, since the Xani are not living organisms.

    Because of the Vespires ancestry (the distant Jol-Vack and shadow beasts, namely), they may physically change in fits of great anger, despair, sorrow, etc. Whenever they are seized by near death, like starvation, and so on, it triggers a defense mechanism. This defense mechanism is similar to a split-personality, also altering the body. Sometimes this will include wings, horns, claws or talons, forked tails, forked tongues, slanted eyes, and overall a more bestial appearance. The creature is the base Vespire, what the progenitor, Seth, was rapidly in the process of becoming. It is the culmination of blood thirst, psychosis, shadow power, magical deftness, and sexual desire. The Beast is not controlled by the individual. It is something which abruptly comes to the surface in dire circumstances.

    As the Vespire ages, they gain more physical effects of their beast form. For example, a millennia old Vespire may have horns, talons, a forked tongue, or various other physiological anomalies. The outcome is the Vespire will eventually fully resemble its Beast in all but the mental capacity.

    Like all Xani, the Vespires have adverse reactions to sunlight in their youth and a continuing severe silver allergy.

    Also, because of their Yog-Sol ancestry, Vespires will, after several thousand years, return to the shadows, their physical forms dispersing and their bodies returning to darkness, like shadow beasts. This or they will mentally become similar to their Beast. At this point, they may resign themselves to a cave in isolation and die, or hunt wildly, become permanent occupants of the shadow realm. The result varies, but, for the pure Vespire, one of these fates cannot be avoided without tampering.

    The Vespires are also among the most organized clans. They are unified under a single banner, the Lord and Lady Vespire, who have sovereign power over the decisions made for the group.
