The origins of the Angel of Death start their murmurs around some ten thousand years ago. Some place his beginnings at closer to six thousand years. Both are correct - time is nebulous. For the sake of argument, we can say he's 'old enough to know better, and young enough not to care.'

The Angel of Death is a curious and spritely being. Hailing from the Nevernever, he inhabits the body of someone recently deceased to perform his angelic duties once summoned. A being entirely of compassion, he uses his powers to help those suffering to pass on to the next plane.

...Or, that's how it used to work. Generally, once summoned, the summoner will enter a contract with the angel. Once the summoner has passed, his duties are fulfilled, and he is no longer required to stay on the physical plane. One dreary evening, October 6th, 1849, a stricken (and very famous) poet deliriously called out for him and requested his help. The angel kept him company through the night, and when the poet could no longer suffer his pain, he let death take him. It was a swift kiss from the Angel of Death, and Edgar passed - leaving behind a legacy and sobriquet the angel still uses to this day as a sort of homage to the man.

The body he inhabited for this job was part human, part kenku - as a result, he retains a lot of bird-like attributes.

He's changed his looks over the years to suit the times, and more recently has come to enjoy the look he has now. Though he never did quite grow out of the 'goth' phase, it too has changed with passing gothic fashions.

That incident with Edgar left him far more curious about humanity, and rather than consider the Nevernever his home, he finds solace in temporary establishments - though he does have a small place to himself he can consider his 'own' should he need it.

Alas, being among humanity for such a long time left him rather bored, and some years ago he fell victim to the more baser enjoyments the living partook in. He fell to sin, and Fell as a result. No longer affiliated with Heaven, religious icons pertaining to Christianity or any derivative thereof make him extremely uncomfortable. Constant exposure can bring about nightmares and panic attacks, and contact with holy water is akin to contact with acid.

Through this, he still considers himself a help to those in need - offering his physical body to those willing to pay for it, and his Kiss of Death to those in dire need of an end. He also, curiously, sells drugs of a sort.*
