THE RASCAL
To get some awkwardness out of the way, thanks to where this young gent was born, the great city of Strang, this Tiefling's name is a bit different than usual. Most Tieflings bear no surname, but when it comes to Strang and its history, lineage names tend to carry power and influence. When it comes to this one, he tends to only go by Charlikas better known simply as 'Charli'. However, on the topic of last names, Charli's happens to be a bit odd. It sounds foreign, yet the Tiefling will swear up and down that he was born and raised in Strang: Yazurött. There's not really an area of town that he is unfamiliar with, but, like any great city, there are places where he would much rather avoid. Standing at 6'1", the Tiefling isn't terribly tall, though his personality and physical appearance are what will capture your attention. The fiend plays a mad viol, and while his voice carries a nice baritone gravel to it, it can still be smooth as satin. Creamy grey skin, and long, lush aubergine hair is where all the man's curves truly are, unless you look at his lean-muscled physique. His wrists indent heavily, and his bone structure is still apparent, but the demon still has good tough meat on him, most especially in his calves as he enjoys long walks — aimless or not — or in his forearms thanks to his pursuit of music. Though, if his large double set of horns (one like a rams, the second flaring back and upwards) weren't enough to unsettle you, or his tail for that matter, then his eyes might. Tieflings don't have pupils, but while they are generally red or black, Charli's are a bewitching mimic of what we know as Moonstone. Charli is very much a person who likes to be in control, though happily will lead from the sidelines, not very much a fan of the limelight unless it concerns his music and nothing more. Able to entertain an inn easily to ease spirits is the only time Charli likes to have eyes on him or the bedroom. He much prefers to whisper in people's ear, and influence. He is not shy about offering advice or voicing his opinion, but he is also wise enough to know when silence is the best weapon. Since a young age, Charli has been keeping his eyes and ears open, and it is something he has grown more grateful for with every passing year. As an adult, now with a honed cunning, it should come as no surprise that with this mindset Charli calls the Rose Throne, the illustrious inn & brothel, home. It is central in Strang's design and all of its clientele have coin, as well as stories to tell. Tongues wag most under the influence in a whore's ear, and what with not merely residing at the Rose but also being the House Bard is nothing to shake a finger at. It is fair to say most people know the Tiefling and his place secures him from most scandal and defamation. For a creature like him, he is well respected, and he returns this with an all around kindness. However, whether Charli is amicable for his own ends really remains to be seen on an individual basis. |
SETTING: CITY OF STRANG Strang is located at the base of the Hallek mountain range, with the mighty Emerald river flowing through it. Strang has unique trade route access thanks to its location. Through the mountain passes and the underway north to the kingdoms beyond. Up and down the river as well, from upriver in the Forest of Ingst or down to the Loua Yang Coast, and farther beyond. Strang has three broad geographical areas. There is the 'tall city' built into the Hallek mountain. Strange island, from which the city gets its name, and finally 'the city in the air,' on the other side of the Emerald. The Red Twins, the towering magical constructions from the cities founding lie on the Eastern and Westernmost ends of the Strange island. Modern scholars now understand that the strange island is almost confluence of lay lines, forming one of the magical poles of the planet. Two bridges connect the strange to the rest of the city. These bridges are far less famous than other landmarks of Strang, such as the black wall or the Red Twins, but is no less an impressive construct. Each bridge stretches nearly a kilometer to reach the other side and is wide enough to have many homes and buildings built alongside, with enough room for an army to march side by side through the thoroughfare. |
The black wall fortresses guard the city's primary entrances, six lies at the ends of the great bridges: Two at the start of the underway and the mountain passes, and the final four at the city limits on either side of the emerald east and west. There was not, not remains, much concern about the south. The Marsh is the largest known and remains mostly unexplored, no one travels the Marsh, except explorers and criminals. No one has found much of anything, but rumors persist of hidden marsh kingdoms too far south to be believed. The city does not divide between poor and rich along these geographic lines. Instead, each one has its own poor and rich sections. This is made all the more confusing by their extreme proximity. In general, the poorest sectors in the city lie along the docks, where goods are brought in, and immigrants and travelers disembark. Of course, some of the wealthiest parts of town lie along the river's edge, though no docks disturb the wealthy's enjoyment of the Emerald. The city government has offices and stations scattered around the city. Still, the empress lives in the Red Twins, only coming out to travel from one twin to the other every six months, a highly ceremonial duty performed by every empress for six thousand years. This is the most almost anyone will see of the empress publicly, and so this day is met with great fanfare, and the entire city shuts down as people stream to catch a glimpse of their reclusive monarch. The inner court, those highest officials in the city live, nominally, with the empress, but in reality, they only ever meet in the Twins. Proximity to each other has brought disaster to the members before, and now they take great personal care.
