Remade in Her Own Image
On the surface, Tate’s life seemed perfectly normal and mundane. A child born into a close-knit loving family. A smart curious kid. The smartest of four siblings, in fact, and everyone knew it, though always rather reserved and ever preferring the company of the family pets over people. There were friends. Not many, but they were certainly close. Yet not even they knew of Tate’s explorations into the occult. Of the herbs, handwritten notes of spells, little figurines bought with allowance money shoved under her bed. And then one day, staring into her hand mirror, she Awakened. It was nothing more than a near imperceptible softening of a jawline, but for Tate, in that moment, an entirely new world unfolded before her. From there, the magic became easier, and Tate let it all wash over her. The water was fine, so she jumped right in, and soon she found herself surrounded by a new family, new possibilities, and something so much higher to attain: Ascension. And so she left everything she once knew behind, so that her arms were empty to embrace a new life.

Despite her impressive skill with life magic, a talent which over the course of years she has used to mold herself into her own idealized image, Tate has joined the Tradition of the Akashic Brotherhood. Now a member of the Li-Hai, she has become fairly well-respected for her magical talents as well as her cool, calm, and collected demeanor. And perhaps her stylishness turns a few heads wherever she goes. Yet she has a tendency to keep everyone at a distance, and there are those that wonder if the level of focus she applies to creating the perfect casting and sleepless nights of study are truly healthy. But anyone who knows Tate knows that she would sooner cut out her own tongue than complain.

While none can deny the ease with which Tate operates with magic, those who have overseen her progress from the beginning know that she still struggles, and that her path to Ascension yet holds a great many obstacles. There are weights she has yet to release from her mind, conflicts yet unresolved. And she is all too aware of each and every one. As of late, Tate seems to have grown even more distracted, sometimes bordering on high strung, and she spends more and more of her time locked away in meditation. Beneath the sophistication and style of the image she has spent years crafting to perfection, the cracks are beginning to show. And she knows full well that she will be the only one to pay the price when it all breaks.
