Ian MacCarthy

Ian was born to a upper-middle class in the suburbs of Los Angeles. He drifted through school with decent grades without really applying himself and was eventually accepted to UCLA. Again his intelligence afforded him the ability to get moderate grades while barely applying himself. He already had a job with a big signing bonus before he graduated and was looking forward to continuing his lazy leisurely life.

During his college years he had gotten into the habit of spending his weekends with some buddies at any casino that let them in. He rarely left with less money than he arrived with, much to his friends' annoyance. Eventually this caused one of his friend's to have a rather violent outburst at a poker table when Ian won. After this Ian took to gambling strictly with strangers and thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and hearing their life stories.

With his new job Ian was able to afford gambling at the more illustrious tables. This was when things changed for him. Meeting average people who liked to live a little dangerously was one thing, but he found that most who could afford to lose vast amounts of money were not worth his time. The worst did not brag about their troubling behavior, but Ian had always been good at reading between the lines. Offhand comments when someone thought they were whispering on the phone, a look at their "wife" if they dared to open their mouth, and eyes that lingered on young women without shame... Ian caught all the signs of that marked these people as powerful, wealthy abusers who had somehow lived awful lives without consequence.

Ian began to wonder about karma. In truth, he did not deserve half of what he had. He had never strived to get anywhere and had just drifted along accepting money and good grades for the bare minimum of effort. Meanwhile, he had ended up on par with some of the people who had worked hard their whole lives to get where he was and others who had cheated their way here. None of it seemed right the more he thought about it. These thoughts had finally begun to coalesce into Ian thinking of making a life change when he met the worst offender he had ever met. He arrived at the table with a young looking woman in tow who was wearing the kind of sunglasses rich housewives wore. But from where Ian sat he could see this girl attended his school, a few years below him. He would not have known her if he had not seen her missing persons photos across campus the week he was leaving. Her glasses obscured a black eye and at that moment Ian knew he was going to kill this man.

He was twenty two when he awoke to the real world and took his first life. Eleven years have passed and as a Thread Cutter he has only gotten more adept at his new trade.
