Personality
Ahlayn is, by nature, usually cordial, calm, and friendly. He has a tendency to use pet names for just about anyone he is on good terms with, though that may extend to those who he is enemies with as well. "Dear," "darling," "love," and "pet," are common names. He is known to be somewhat reclusive at times, holing up in his lab for hours or going through depressive episodes. When he does emerge into public, it is often for maintaining relationships and appearances as a noble. Despite this, Ahlayn has been known to welcome almost anyone into his home who comes knocking. This includes people who might steal from him or try to kill him. He sees to it that they are fed, clothed and bathed and have a place to sleep for the night.
Like any proper noble, Ahlayn has a talent for speaking and saying a lot while saying absolutely nothing of substance. Sometimes it can be like pulling teeth to get a straight answer out of him. Though, when he is in a particularly foul mood, curses and far more direct phrasing are common. And it may not be hard to get him there: Ahlayn's emotions are volatile, especially when he feels he has lost control of a situation. He can be jealous, exceptionally nosy, and at times fearful. Several of these may manifest as anger rather than a direct expression of that feeling. But always an opportunist, he will gather information about business contacts, acquaintances, and if pressed even friends.
There are those who suspect Ahlayn is willing to harm others to achieve his own goals. Perhaps they are right. Still, Ahlayn often fusses over those he cares for and will go out of his way to protect them, even if those attempts are misguided. He loves intensely and quickly, and grieves intensely and slowly. In times of suffering, he will turn to the bottle to suppress those feelings. He also tends to have intense nightmares at times, remnants of past trauma. -
History
Ahlayn Nightfall (Bloodwing) was born in Nightfall Estate, Eversong Woods, Quel'thalas, to Sartura Nightfall and Hathvelion Riverblood. A few years after his birth, his younger brother, Eldris, was born. The two were thick as thieves, and Ahlayn found solace in his brother's companionship, even when Lord Riverblood left Sartura and seemingly disappeared from their life. Hathvelion was a positive influence in Ahlayn's life, teaching him a love for music and introducing him to his first instrument (the cello), and leading him with a gentle hand. But his sudden departure left Ahlayn cold, and he holds a grudge against Lord Riverblood for leaving Eldris and him alone with their somewhat unhinged mother.
Ahlayn dreamed of becoming a Farstrider, but instead was taught as any nobleman of House Nightfall was to be taught: in the arcane. He implemented his increasing knowledge of spells and swordsmanship into becoming a spellblade, one of the finest his family has known. The budding noble was also expected to care for the massive estate gardens and learn appropriate skills in alchemy, though he later specialized in toxicology to fulfill a person interest of his. Ahlayn was tutored in Thalassian history, in language, in the arts, in manners and courtship, like any prominent noble should have been.
The estate and its assets fell into his hands when the Scourge invaded, and Sartura fell in the fighting. Eldris, unable to withstand the sudden withdrawal of power from the Sunwell, became a Wretched. Alone in his responsibilities, and shielding his brother from the law, Ahlayn turned to his job as a Magister and put his soul into his work....

Physical Description
Ahlayn stands at 6'5", and is thin and lanky, with just enough muscle to manage his everyday care of the family's garden. He would be best described as "beautiful," but his somewhat feminine features belie the complexity and moral ambiguity hidden beneath. He has auburn hair that he often keeps bound in a loose ponytail over the shoulder, and emerald-gold eyes. In public, one might not be able to pick him out as a noble due to his choice of drab leathers and the tools he uses to ply his trade. But in private, he maintains the lifestyle and clothing choices of a nobleman, albeit a bit of a foppish one. This includes flamboyant dress robes, sparkling circlets, earrings and beads in his hair, and anything else he might find particularly appealing at the moment.
Though his skin might look otherwise flawless, friends and family are often aware of a mass of old, livid scars he has on his back. A keen observer might realize these are from being whipped. Most likely these were successive events that opened, and re-opened, the wounds in question. When not with a lover or close associate, Ahlayn is unlikely to expose the scars to the light of day. He may feel a sense of shame around them, or maybe there are some questions or memories he would like to avoid.
