    The Minatozaki twins; Kaito and Sakura; barely ever apart. Showing up one day out of nowhere in high school; no one knew where day were from; who they were. Notorious for being reserved and keeping to themselves; him being the more withdrawn between the two of them. At times she would engage with their peers; but he never spoke to anyone unless he had too. Silence surrounding them as they walked the high school hallways. No person daring to break the quiet; unlike her, he was intimidating; almost hostile. If eyes could kill, everyone in their school would be dead. They feared him; everyone praying not to be paired up with him for assignments; crossing their fingers to not run into him in the hallways. Rumours about the twins; never confirming nor denying anything. Barely reacting to questions asked; if answering, it would be vague. Sparking everyone’s curiosity, but only leaving them with more questions. Hardly any information on their family, except they were loaded. Always having the newest designer collections; arriving to school in a Maserati with tinted windows one week, just to arrive in a yellow jaguar the next. Flashing their money so nonchalantly.

    December month, senior year; Kaito showing up as usual, but his sister was nowhere to be seen. The same thing happened the next day, and the next. If it hadn’t been for the funeral notice in the local newspaper, her death would never have been known to their peers. Her cause of death has yet to be revealed. Once again rumours; suicide, murder, faked death, whatever absurd thing that would make it seem more interesting. The funeral seemed reticent; almost mysterious. Kaito standing next to the closed casket; showing no emotions. Even his own sister’s funeral wasn’t enough to break down his facade; just standing there, straight face as always. No sorrow to be found in his eyes, but his heart was shattered. The pain of losing his other half tearing him apart inside; left behind. 5 stages of grief; never getting past the first one: denial. Not acknowledging her death; not acknowledging her life. “Who?” he would reply, if asked about his sister. Seeming even more closed off than before; even more emotionless; heartless. Not even one tear shed over his sister; afraid he will never stop crying if he first begins. Lonelier than ever. Finishing high school as if things were normal; enrolling into college; a supposedly new start. But the rumours followed him; never getting a break. Constantly reminded of Sakura. Finding remedy in a pill glass. It started out as prescription anxiety medication; but that wasn’t enough. Willing to go further; benzodiazepines became cannabis, cannabis became cocaine, cocaine became ecstasy. Some call it poison, but to him it’s the cure; a way to suppress his unwanted feelings even more. A way to let go. Spending every night at crazy college parties; getting high with a bunch of strangers. Feeling lonely even in a crowd; the drugs twisting his brain. Life feeling like a fever dream.
