Born the second child and first daughter of Ravkan nobleman Samuil Starkov and his wife Aliandra Starkov, Yelena "Ellena" Iliana Starkov learnt to live in the shadow of her older brother, Gavriil Rodion Starkov. Though she was no less capable—if not more capable—of learning the same things he did, she was instead taught the importance of using the right fork at dinner so as not to appear uncouth, of being humble so as not to threaten her male peers, and of knowing when her opinion was welcomed and when it was not. Her education was what could be expected of a nobleborn lady like her; being well-versed in literature, learning how to play a pianoforte, navigate in social gatherings and manage a household when it was her turn to start a family of her own. Thus, Ellena grew up in a noble family of traditional values, wealth and status that gave them a place at the court in Os Alta, Ravka. Gavriil was of course the firstborn son and so he was the most important of the two of them, especially with his affinity for the Small Science and close friendship to the crown prince and sole heir to Ravka's throne. With Gavriil so confident and demanding, Ellena could never get any form of attention when standing anywhere near him. In the Starkov household, women were to be seen and not heard, regardless of what to bring to the table, and it was due to this upbringing that Yelena came to be known as coy, soft, passive—just like her mother, when in fact, she had the potential to be anything but. Her gentleness was learned, a byproduct of being told that was the only thing a young lady should be. Her parents appreciated her for her gentle nature, she was cultivated and no trouble, there was no risk that she would do something to shame them like there was with Gavriil, which made their lives much easier.

While her parents were confident and powerful people, Ellena was nothing like them; she may have inherited their looks but certainly not their personality or that was what people thought of her. Because her gentle nature, she was kept in a bubble as a child. Both her father and her mother protected her from external sources and tried to keep her innocence in tact since it was a rare quality at court and they did not want her to lose it, if at all avoidable. They needed for it to be intact since they planned to marry her off in the interest of gaining more power; both for political and personal reasons. Therefore, Ellena grew up to become a beautiful woman, her sweet looking features matching her kind personality in a way that made people love her before they even spoke to her. She exuded kindness and the older generation at court seemed to like that. What her parents didn't expect nor planned was Ellena's affinity for the Small Science, marking her as Grisha like her brother.
It was for that reason alone that, rather than allowing her to join the court to learn how it worked along with all its schemings as soon as she was of age, her father chose to send her to train at the Little Palace. He allowed her to train at the Little Palace in order to show the King of Ravka his good faith and loyalty to the Crown and he was in no position to forbid Ellena from training just like her brother. Ellena welcomed the opportunity with enthusiasm, thrilled to get away—to prove her worth. The years she spent away from home changed her for the better; not only did she learn to master and hone her skills as a Grisha healer, but she became the woman her parents had long suppressed—as smart as she was beautiful, confident but unfailingly kind and well-mannered, and the farthest thing away from that pretty little doormat they’d raised her to be—but that freedom only lasted until the sudden disappearance of her brother and the Crown Prince, and it wasn’t long before she was again told to lower her voice at the dinner table and let the men speak. Seeing as she'd her first taste of freedom, it wasn't a surprise that she secretly grew to hate this. The fact that she was looked down upon, just because she was a woman, infuriated her to a point where she almost wished she'd been born as a boy instead of a girl. However, as she knew it was pointless to complain about, she knew that she had to be very careful about saying anything to anyone or how she behaved in public – sometimes in private too – since she didn't want to deal with her parents' wrath.

When the opportunity arose to join the search for crown prince and Gavriil, Ellena left with the other Grishas from the Little Palace without telling her parents about it, knowing they would probably try to stop her from leaving Os Alta alltogether. -

Grisha are humans who practice the Small Science and are traditionally divided into three orders, Corporalki, Etherealki and Materialki, with each order being further divided into specialized types. Most Grisha show certain powers at a young age but sometimes Grisha are born with extremely uncommon hereditary abilities to summon light or darkness.
⎨CORPORALKI⎬Corporalki, or the Order of the Living and the Dead, are Grisha whose power focuses on the human body. The Order is divided into three groups: Heartrenders, Healers, and Tailors.
⎨HEALER⎬Healers are Grisha of the Corporalki class whose power manipulate and focuses on the human body, usually with healing affects. In the Second Army, a healer wears a red kefta with gray embroidery.
Healers uses their powers to heal others, as they utilize their ability to manipulate the human body in order to heal wounds and injuries. They can heal wounds, mend bones, quicken the healing process, etc.
They can also sense the presence of diseases and gain detailed understanding about them. Because of this, they can create, manipulate, cause or heal all kinds of diseases, including their severity, methods of spreading, etc.
In relation this this, they have the power to alleviate symptoms of diseases, illnesses, and pain to more endurable levels. However, this cannot eradicate these symptoms but it makes them bearable for a certain amount of time in order to find the proper treatment.
⎨LIMITATIONS⎬Just like Heartrenders, healers cannot use their abilities when the movement of their hands are restricted. They also require touch for their powers to affect their patients. Moreover, they cannot repair wounds inflicted by a nichevo'ya, nor can they raise the dead, but as long as there's even a hint of life left, healing is possible.
