Gavriil Rodion Starkov was born the first child and first son of Ravkan nobleman X Starkov and his wife. Being the firstborn son had its perks, making Gavriil the heir to the Starkov family and thus, he was to follow in his father's footsteps and stood to inherit everything from his father's legacy and wealth to the family manor. Gavriil never wanted for anything and with a fine education to match, he grew up to be a confident, young man.
Gavriil's father planned to have his son take up the mantle when he came of age, however, those plans took a sudden turn when Gavriil turned 12 and it was discovered that he was able to practice the Small Science, marking him as Grisha. And it wasn't just the manipulation of one of the elements, no Gavriil could summon pure darkness which was rare even for a Grisha. While his father wasn't happy with the turn of events, he was in no position to forbid Gavriil from practicing the Small Science because of his family's place at court and therefore, he could not afford to loose the King's favor. In order to save face and avoid loosing the King's favor, Gavriil was sent to train at the Little Palace together with other Grishas who were to join the King's Second Army when they came of age and finished their training. At the Little Palace, Gavriil begun his training which was gruelling work to begin with but it wasn't long before he was able to best someone almost twice his size.
It was also during the training at the Little Palace that Gavriil met and befriended Zoran Illarion Romanov, the crown prince of Ravka. Though they were vastly different in temperament and personality, they instantly hit it off and soon became thick as thieves. Somehow, Gavriil and Zoran always got into trouble, whether it was before, during or after training, and while Zoran was the most to blame for the trouble, Gavriil mostly got the fault for it. Not that Gavriil minded, since he was just as much to blame and in on the fun as Zoran, but the latter had an annoying knack for talking or charming his way out of trouble (and everything else for that matter). The two of them used to make a joke out of the fact that Zoran was the brain to Gavriil's muscles, because the first preferred strategy while the latter preferred action.

Gavriil fought his way up the ranks of Grishas, demonstrating his rare power for summoning darkness time after time, and that's how he got the King's attention who offered him a place among the ranks of Zoran's personal guards because of his ability to summon pure darkness, an ability that the king coveted for his own personal gain. If he had a Shadow Summoner to protect his heir, he wouldn't have to worry about the safety of his son. The crown prince's personal guards consisted of a smaller unit of skilled and specially trained Grishas whose skills were on the offensive side and who had received more physical training. Gavriil chose to join the ranks of the crown prince's personal guards, when he finished his training at the Little Palace, as he felt it was his duty to himself and his country to protect Ravka's future. His parents was proud of him (although the father was not to begin with, still mulling over his lost his heir) for what he had become. Becoming the crown prince's personal guard was no small feat, as one had to possess a certain skill and that's where Gavriil's ability to summon of darkness came in. He and two other Grishas from the crown prince's personal guard went with Zoran when he had to serve his mandatory military service. Zoran earned Gavriil's respect when he chose to serve in the infantry as an ordinary Ravkan instead of serving as an officer, as was usual for the Royal family and higher-ranking nobles.
Gavriil's parents as well as the king and qeen of Ravka were devastated when they found out that Gavriil had disappeared together with the Zoran after he had ended his military service in the infantry. The news would have brought shame to the Starkov family (it had already brought them the King's disgrace) if it weren't for the fact that it was ordered to be kept a secret so their enemies woudn't take advantage of Ravka's current state of weakness. Zoran was supposed to come back and marry a suitable girl from one of Kerchs or Ravkas noble families before he took over for his father and was crowned king. The invitations had already reached many of the noble families, so the royal family kept the farce going while they sent their best Grisha on the search for their crown prince and Gavriil. No one suspected what was going on, not behind the closed doors at court, and the few who did were threatened to keep quiet. Neither Gavriil's parents nor the royal family know the reason behind their disappearance, or so they claimed. Gavriil chose to follow Zoran in order to protect him from the Crown itself.

Grisha are humans who practice the Small Science and are traditionally divided into three orders, Corporalki, Etherealki and Materialki, with each order being further divided into specialized types. Most Grisha show certain powers at a young age but sometimes Grisha are born with extremely uncommon hereditary abilities to summon light or darkness.
|ETHEREALKI|Etherealki, or the Order of Summoners, are Grisha whose power lies in the manipulation of different natural elements. This Order is divided into Squallers, Inferni and Tidemakers.
The order is loosely referred to as Summoners, and Etherealki typically train in pairs; Inferni partner with other Inferni, while Squallers and Tidemakers are usually train together.
The Sun Summoner and The Shadow Summoner, respectively, are also technically considered Etherealki, yet their kefta are usually gold or black.
The word Etherealki comes from classical greek αἰθήρ (aithḗr) which means sky or heaven. But aithḗr is also the fifth element in the ancient science of four elements which include water, air and fire, which can be summoned by the Etherealki.
|SHADOW SUMMONER|Shadows Summoners are a rare and powerful class of Grisha. Shadow Summoners belong to the Etherealki, or the Order of Summoners, who are Grisha whose power lies in the manipulation of different natural elements. In the Second Army, the Shadow Summoner wears a black kefta.
Their power is shown in their ability to manipulate and summon darkness and shadows. Shadow Summoners' Grisha power can be described as inky pool of darkness in their hands, which they can shape into tendrils or waves of darkness, and in some cases, darkness can be made into the Cut, a lethal ability that uses shadows or darkness to create a slicing effect on the target. They can also blend in with the shadows and disappear almost completely.
|LIVING AMPLIFIER|Usually, amplifiers are objects that increase a Grisha's powers but some humans have been known to be living amplifiers. In this case, living amplifiers have the ability to detect Grisha power in a person through touch and some are considered very powerful, because being a living amplifier can affect their own Grisha power.
