BUILT TO SURVIVE
UNABLE TO LIVE ________________ Kai Arellius was born in District 2 of Panem in the year of the 50th Hunger Games as the youngest of three. Son of a major weapons manufacturer, Kai was introduced to not only wealth, but violence at an early age. While both older siblings were trained for The Hunger Games as well, he showed great prospects at an early age. Perhaps, it was due to watching his older siblings that he quickly got involved in the training. It was not just physical training, but mental training as well, and he especially showed to have instincts and wits beyond his siblings. Their rivalry was natural, but rather intense, especially since the youngest seemed to be so much better than them. As his skills grew, everyone expected his pride to grow, but while his confidence did, he remained scarily focused. He wanted the prize, especially as his older siblings died in the game. They did back-to-back games and lost, even if they made it far and it only motivated him more. Strangely enough, he felt little grief of their deaths. They were never brought up to be a family: They were competitors for the same prize, even if they would never compete together. There was no love, only pressure and somehow he thrived on it. While the others had failed, there was hope for him, truly a machine, stripped of a need for affection, only with one goal. Normally, he would wait until he turned 18 just like everyone else, just like his siblings did, to volunteer for the games, but he wanted to bigger and better; the pride was starting to show, if not on his part, then on his parents'. They wanted to go big or go home with this last, prosperous son ― how he was allowed compared to everyone else is still something that is questioned, but by the age of 12, he volunteered for the 62nd Hunger Games. He shouldn't just win, he should write history and set records. He felt ready: The sponsors loved him, the fans loved him, he was cute, yet fears, he even scored a 10 on his training score, simply remarkable for his age. He was one of the favourites, but his age was also the reason why he was not the top favourite to take the prize. His arena was a labyrinth full of obstacles and traps, no ordinary maze at all, but definitely something where his size and speed was a clear benefit. Somehow he was still perceived as incredibly adorable even while killing off the other tributes in the most calculated, cold manners. It was like a switch went off ― he had trained for this and he was ready. There was something invigorating about taking the lives of others, even those of his own brief alliances, as they were simply easier targets. They thought they could trust him and take him out easily at the end of the game because of his age and stature, but he had everyone fooled, which only mesmerised the audience. If he wasn't a favourite among most before, his brutality made him one, and as he stood as the winner, he quickly rose to be one of the most popular victors in the history of the games. What he thought would be glory and grandeur, quickly turned out to be something very different. As the adrenaline wore off, the nightmares kicked in. Arriving at the Capitol, he was hailed the victor and parties were thrown in his honour. Even if he was one of the youngest to ever win, it somehow didn't make them treat him any differently. He was introduced to alcohol almost immediately and it somehow numbed the awful feeling that was slowly filling him up. It was as if he was slowly becoming aware of what happened, as if a veil lifted, as if he realised that it was not actually a game. Reality hit hard, but he was loved. Everyone loved him and wanted a piece of him. He never really made it back to District 2, but was kept as a prize in the Capitol. He won, but it was the elite who truly gained a prize in him. Tossed between people, mainly the highest bidder, he lost control quickly. The intake of drugs and alcohol increased, the nightmares did too, especially as they loved playing clips of him killing people in the most creative manners during his game over and over at parties as a constant reminder of how horrible he actually is. He became a shell, nothing left but what the Capitol wanted him to be; someone brought to parties and taken home, then shipped off to his expensive apartment. At the age of 15, he tried to take his life for the first time. It happened once again after that, which put him under almost full surveillance as he was one that could not be lost. Since then, he has been kept in a tight leash to ensure that he fulfills the duties that he unknowingly took upon him when he won. He hates it, he hates his life, he hates living, and he hates the Capitol and President Snow more than anything else. |
○ C O L D
adj. | cold Lacking in friendliness or warmth of feeling. Kai comes off as incredibly cold, distant, and unsympathetic, which he in many ways is. He does not like company, he does nok like most people, and he has no interest in getting to know others. It has never done him anything and he has no interest in them getting close to him, since they might see what he is so desperately trying to hide. His coldness is an extreme defense mechanism that he would never describe as a defence mechanism, of course. He would not need one, vulnerability is not something he would ever admit to, creating excessive distance is the best way. |
○ B R O K E N
adj. | bro·ken Damaged or altered by or as if by breaking. Kai is broken, some would probably say beyond repair. He has little hope, his want to live is more or less nothing, he prefers to drink himself completely wasted, and yet he will still go out and pretend to be The Golden Child that the Capitol loves so much. He can still put on a facade, he is a very trained drunk, balancing dangerously close on the line between completely wasted and nicely drunk. He cannot sleep and yet he still goes to parties all dressed up just like the Capitol would want him to, walking around, pleasing all of those stuck-up citizens of the Capitol. |
○ E F F I C I E N T
adj. | ef·fi·cient Producing or capable of producing a desired result. Kai probably doesn't seem very efficient these days. Training is really the only place where he is efficient, but otherwise he must seem rather lazy and lacking any kind of care. He is rather efficient, though, someone who carries everything through, even if it might not seem like it. It just means that he pulls through, even if it is not obvious. He is a hard worker in every right and he will do whatever it takes to finish what he has put his mind up to; these days, though, he doesn't want to do much, but he might just surprise you - and when you realise, it's already too late to react. |
○ F I G H T I N G
adj. | fight·ing Having or showing a readiness to fight. While Kai might be broken, he somehow manages to keep on going. He might not care for it much, but he has a basic instinct that keeps him going, a survival instinct that keeps him fighting. He has always been taught that he should keep on fighting no matter what, which was something he brought to the arena, probably something that carried him a good portion of the way in combination with his level of skill. Sometimes, he would like to leave it behind, sometimes, he would like to just give up, but it feels impossible. It has been forced into his head that he has to win and to win, he has to fight. |
