THE WORLD IS BURNING
AND I'M IN THE CENTRE OF IT ALL ________________ Augustus "Gus" Young was born to the couple of Helen and Garett. They were high school sweethearts, ready to start a family even with Garett's plans of joining the military. Helen had known about it ever since they got to know each other and even if it made her anxious, but it was his dream and she had no reason not to support it. All she wanted was for them to start a family and she was ready to follow him anywhere in the world as his career flourished. The fact that he was present for the birth of their first child was wonderful, both young, him about to go out for his first tour overseas. While he followed his dream, she was supported by friends and family, raising the young child. This continued for years: His father would come home and it would be the best time of his life, before he would leave again. He didn't understand at the time, but his father was no ordinary soldier, which was one of the reasons why he went out so often. This honestly only made him even more excited for every time he came home. It was a good life, they had a nice, little house in the suburbs of Gotham, school was fine, he did alright, a typical kid with too much energy and a temper already from that point, but nothing out of the ordinary. Life got better when Gus was 10 and his mom announced that he was going to be a big brother. He had always wanted to get a sibling, so he was beyond excited. He was definitely all over the place during the pregnancy, did everything he could to make it easier for her, for since his dad had been overseas so often, he had always done whatever he could to help his mom out. When she was six months pregnant, his dad was called on a mission all of a sudden. It was nothing major to them, it happened all the time and while he often came back bruised, there was only a sliver of natural anxiety. To Gus, though, his dad was invincible no matter what and he always came home. This time, though, would be the last. He later found out that it was lucky that they even got to burry him. That day, seeing his casket being carried out of a plane, standing next to his crying, heavily pregnant mom still haunts him, the funeral even more; and it would change his life drastically forever. Gus was already more mature than many his age, but now he had to grow up quickly. For a long time, he was just angry. The months went by and he struggled, being so young and suddenly thrown into the reality of life. The birth of his baby sister, Amelia, changed it slightly. With her, he had something new to protect, not just his mom. Holding her in his arms was the only thing that really made him calm in the middle of a raging storm. He started doing worse in school, though, toughing up as a way to grow up. Things truly went downhill when his mom met a new man. It was only three years after the death of his father and even if it was a long time for her, it felt like only a moment for him. The man, John, though, made it worse. Yes, he was rich, he showered his mom, his sister, and him in gifts, but he still hated him, he had nothing on his dad. It only got worse when they got engaged, moved into his mansion of a home, the wedding, uff, he did not take it well and it was a miracle that he didn't cause a scene, simply because he wouldn't want to hurt his mom, even if he didn't like his new stepdad. To no surprise, the joy of having found newfound love changed: John proved himself to be incredibly controlling, cared little for Gus while doting on Amelia, since she was still impressionable, being so young and never having met her dad. What Gus was too young to realise was the ties and nature of his stepdad's business, though he would soon learn. Gus felt trapped in the home, his mom no longer the same, almost a shell of who she once was. Seeing her deteriorate made him even more angry, made him spiral in school and all around do worse; Amelia being the only thing that he truly cared for. She was so small, so precious, the only thing to remind him of the fact that there's good in this world. It didn't get better when John started to bring Gus into his business at the age of 16. He hated it, but it was that rather than a beating and as soon as John threatened Amelia, he did what he had to. He did well, his temper and anger being both an issue and a gift to this line of work, but it earned him money and kept the family safe even if he preferred them far, far away from John. He moved away as soon as he could, only did what he absolutely had to do while hating the money given to him, but still accepting it. Life was never good, but it was not horrible when he got to see his little sister, but everything changed when she got ill. It happened so suddenly, yet so quickly: He visited her, had a fight with John where she had to step in, they hugged as he left and within a week she was hospitalised. He hates everything, he hates the world for making her ill, especially as ill as she is, and he hates himself even more for not being able to do anything. Nothing is good, everything is falling apart, and he can do nothing, especially when John's paying the hospital bill. He has little prospect in life and the only thing worth going forth for is slipping out of his fingers. |
○ T E M P E R A M E N T A L
adj. | tem·per·a·men·tal Marked by excessive sensitivity and impulsive mood changes, unpredictable in behaviour or performance. In many ways, Gus is controlled by his temper and the anger he almost constantly feel. He rarely has a moment to himself where he feels serene. If not driven by outer circumstances, he is left with his own thoughts which is not necessarily a joyful place. He has always had a temper, a very short fuse, but it is something that has gotten increasingly worse the last 10 years or more. If he wants to let it out, he will and if you're in his way, it's simply too bad for you. He is easy to make angry and does little to control his mood swings, even if he is well aware of them. You can piss him off simply by looking at him wrongly and he will let you know that you did. |
○ L O Y A L
adj. | loy·al Unswerving in allegiance. If you have a secret you want to entrust to someone, Gus isn't the worst to go to. Yes, he might have a raging and scary temper, but he will never give you up if you entrusted something in him. Even his stepdad is someone he wouldn't give up just like that. He performs well under pressure and even the worst type of interrogations can't break him. He will lie for you, even if that means that he will take the fall, he's simply not someone to ever turn on others, even when he probably should. He is tight-lipped and won't even flinch if confronted, strangers, friends, foes, and family alike. He will take the fall, the blame, or the bullet, whatever comes first. |
○ D I S O B E D I E N T
adj. | dis·obe·di·ent Given to resisting authority or another's control. While loyalty and disobedience are opposites, there is one general area, where Gus shows little to no loyalty: authorities. The only kind of authority he responded to was his dad, but he will gives no shits about the police, businessmen, his stepdad, teachers, any type of person with any kind of supposed authority over him. In his mind, they can all go fuck themselves. He might lie for people, but it's even easier for him to lie to cops. No one has authority over him and, like in everything else, he will let them know that they're nothing to him, just because they have a degree or a shiny badge. He does what he feels like, even if they won't like it. It's not his problem. |
○ H A N D S - O N
adj. | hands-on Actively and personally involved in something. If someone has to do it, Gus will be there. He doesn't care about getting his hands dirty, he'll do the job, whatever's necessary. He hates being told what to do and sometimes it's just easier following yourself and your gut (even if that ends up being exactly what you were told to do). You can't truly trust anyone but yourself, which means that you're the only one who will do the job properly, if you want it done in a certain way. On top of that, he is extremely physical: It's not words that fixes things in his eyes, it's getting down and dirty, getting your hands into it. He solves problems with his fists, honestly. |
| Nuclear Manipulation |
Gus possesses the ability to manipulate the atomic particles of a nuclear radiation, meaning that he is essentially a walking nuclear reactor in himself. He can create, shape, and manipulate the forces of nuclear reactions, including fusion and fission, which grant him near infinite abilities dealing with electricity, magnetism, heat, radiation, etc. At this point in time, he has no proper control of his abilities, but the power lying underneath is scary. Currently, he has mainly created heat; he is warm to the touch, but when he gets angry, it gets worse. He has no real control over this either and it mostly just oozes out of him. He has pushed people before, too, delivering impact of concussive force by using the particles in and around people to push them away from him or towards certain objects. It is done to a minor degree, enough for him to notice, enough for others to find strange, but not enough to cause worry, just make him incredibly intimidating. He is also immune to nuclear and atomic energy, while also unknowingly. In theory, he will also be able to dissociate atomic bonds and tear apart the tethers of molecules that hold together all matter, spreading untold levels of chaos and destruction to living and non-living matter by simply eliminating the bonds that hold molecules together; to generate a field that completely nullifies the electric field holding atoms together, causing disintegration into dust; to release everything, including matter, energy, power, and concepts to attacks of various shapes, either projected, as melee attacks, etc.; to utilise nuclear energy with his physical combat, granting him an impressive selection of offensive abilities and making him exceptionally powerful as an opponent, but also leaving him weak in terms of defense; to create, shape, and manipulate radioactivity, the process by which a nucleus of an unstable atom loses energy by emitting particles of ionizing radiation; to create, shape, and manipulate nuclear fallout; to increase the kinetics of atoms and molecules causing them to ignite, making not only small combustions, but fuller sized explosions to a shockingly degree; and worst of all, to create explosions on the level of nuclear explosions and radiation bombs. His strong powers do have one very specific great weakness: If he does not control his powers properly, which he currently cannot, he can literally 'leak' natural radiation. This means that he might kill people by accident due to strong levels of radiation or influence cancer. He does not radiate at all times, but it can be triggered and he does not know it. It is also very draining in itself: The more energy he uses, especially when he uses it unknowingly and therefore in abundance, the more tired he gets, it can physically tire him. |
