///resented, neglected, determined If his father ever told him about any of this, he doesn't remember it. As far as Ezra is concerned, he's as human as the next kid. Everything about his biology has checked out and hit all the milestones when he grew. Well, aside from what came from spurts of malnutrition and dehydration. Lucas has resented Ezra and blamed him for Ada's death from the start, and it showed in every moment of his upbringing. The man turned to drugs and alcohol, and for the most part Ezra was left to fend for himself as soon as he was able. Long before he has any retained memories, they moved away from the house by the little lake, no doubt due to the crashing finances in the widower's life. All the boy ever knew was his father's blame for his mother's death. Naturally, he assumed she died giving birth to him once he was old enough to have any idea what he might mean. And there weren't any of those original neighbors around to correct him. Even if he had a mind to google his family, part of the very large sum of money that Lucas had paid the necromancer, had gone towards making sure the paper trail reflected the outcome of the ritual. No news article, no evidence that Ezra had lied in that casket. At least not on something so easily found by a regular person. The abuse was ongoing, pushing Ezra out of the house as much as possible. He had friends in the crowded community where they lived and spent a lot of time with neighbors as they'd allow. To keep himself fed he'd steal and do odd jobs around for a little cash, hide it from his father and try to squeeze as much out of his sorry excuse for a parent as he could. Sometimes his dad would show a glimpse of decent fatherhood, other times Ezra just walked away with more bruises. Somewhere along the way of keeping himself out of the house, Ezra developed a love for winter and ice skating. He figured it was just a hobby he'd adopted out of necessity to keep himself busy in the winter when he couldn't stand to be home and didn't have anywhere warm to be. Entirely self taught, he still has a lovely talent for figure skating, or anything on ice. |
