    “The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”

    Qalin's life did not start in an extraordinary way. No, rather he was the seventh child of seventeen born to his parents. His mothers and fathers were hard workers and their herds provided for the family. In the high mountain meadows Qalin learned how to herd zhep, fish, hunt and the other important things that a zhepherd needed to know. But the young man wanted more out of life. It was in books that he first learned that there was more to the world than zhep and family. Qalin's mothers insisted that he learn to read and had taught him alongside his siblings, a skill not all in Suda could boast of. It took years of practice, but by the time he was eight he had read the family's four books cover to cover more times than he could count. He started doing odd jobs for neighbors so that they'd pay him by loaning him a book or the odd newspaper. But his parents didn't have the means to offer him a better education than they could provide or pay for. But Qalin wasn't ready to live his life in the mountains herding zhep.

    “It could not be worse, there is nothing worse than war.”

    Thirteen. That was how old Qalin was when he ran away from home. He was big for his age, and so strong! It wasn't hard to convince the recruiter that he was older than he was. It wasn't uncommon for people in Suda to not have papers, who had time to go to the capital and get such things. For years people from Suda had been recruited by foreigners for military service. It was a way to get away from the small "backwater", a way to see the world.

    “You will be good to me, won’t you? Because we’re going to have a strange life.”

    After the war Qalin found himself adrift. He had been released from service, like so many others, when the governments deemed the need for so many in arms to be no longer necessary. The war to end all wars had been fought after all! Why should they have so many people ready to fight another that would never, or should never, come. Now was the time for peace.
