    Kitchen appliances were just beginning to cool as Griffon packed up well-seasoned dinners for family, friends, and whoever else might be lucky enough to look hungry in his presence. Whether it be an unexpected guest, neighbor, or a stranger on the street, it felt good to be prepared with the olive branch.

    His four-year-old cell phone buzzed on the counter three times, too insistent. Shoulders slumped even further, the shabby knit of his thrifted sweater barely able to stay in place. Griffon wiped his hands on his jeans with a deep breath and hit speakerphone.
