Maja Esther Léon

Born toward the end of the Black Death, Esther grew up sheltered and unknowing of the world outside. Her family was initially not poor and survived well throughout the outbreak, though work kept them from giving Esther the attention she desperately needed. As a teen, she found herself lost in the books her father, Dimitri, would bring after his long days from home. It was almost like his form of an apology. Winona, her mother, was a doctor; healing the villagers with her balms and oils. As Esther aged, she finally was allowed to attend school. During this time, Dimitri's competition finally won over his only import, plunging his smithy into darkness. Her mother died soon after from cancer of the lungs. Their wealth diminished quickly as the years went by, alcoholism taking quickly to her father. Esther grew even more inclined to slip away into the night, months away on foot, to the next village where she would serve as a servant to the Lord.
