Wonder Woman has a long and storied history, the real-world history being possibly more interesting than the character's fictional history. As is known to most, Wonder Woman was created as a reflection of the pro-feminist and pro-B.D.S.M. beliefs and indeed life of her creator, William Moulton Marston, as well as his wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston, and their lover and domestic partner Olive Byrne.
Perhaps Vice.com put it best, in the aptly titled Wonder Woman Was Created by a Feminist Bondage Fetishist Who Wanted a Matriarchal Utopia. I think the opening lines say it best: "William Marston, the psychologist and comic author who created Wonder Woman, believed that the only way to save the world from war was for women to rule the world and for men to become more like women. Marston was, among other things, a noted psychological researcher and an enthusiastic bondage fetishist; he believed comic books were a great form for educational, anti-patriarchy propaganda."
A truly interesting read is SlutEver.com's A Guide to Wonder Woman’s Kinky History, which isn't really as lurid as the title might suggest. That said, it's a rather extensive look with an overtone of bemoaning what might have been, given Marston's untimely death due to cancer.
Wired.com's We Don't Need No Stinking Wonder Woman Movie is an interesting look at the idea that what Marston tried to create can never be recaptured, and attempts to portray the character today miss the mark, occasionally spectacularly. It is that last point that this character is an attempt at addressing.
Rather than running from the B.D.S.M. elements, this version of Diana is meant to explore them. Instead of hiding them away, they're to be brought out into the light and examined. What happens when someone who can knock out Superman extols the virtues of alternatives to heteronormative "coupled" relationships? To the Lasso of Obedience offering men and women ecstatic release in submission? I don't know the answers to those questions, but I have to think they're interesting.
All of that said, I'd happily consider other types of stories where such elements aren't the focus. The character is interesting, rich, and complex, and there are plenty of interesting things to explore.
To that end, this version of Diana doesn't really come from any one, specific canon. There are nods to Lynda Carter and Gal Gadot, other ideas, and whatever a partner and I feel like tossing in. She takes inspiration from a variety of sources, so I hope to encourage a partner to not feel limited, themselves.
As an aside, just in case it needs to be said, this version of Diana, much like her original creator, may touch on concepts and elements that people of a modern paradigm may find disagreeable. Communication is key, as I don't want to go down a path a partner doesn't like. Please tell me what is and isn't liked beforehand, but just as importantly, I hope a partner feels free and encouraged to pause and talk if the story ends up going into a disagreeable direction.
