The village of Zennor along the coast of Cornwall has the image of a mermaid in the local church. Local myths said a beautiful, mysterious woman caused a commotion in the village when she attended a service at the church. The strange woman sang the hymns in the sweetest voice.

Legends claimed a sailor captured a beautiful mermaid and brought her to the Black Mere Pool. The mermaid eventually fell in love with the sailor. The sea-fairy was so grief-stricken when the sailor died that her love turned to rage. The mermaid refused to leave the pool and still haunts Black Mere Pool to this day.

The fear of sirens was at its heights when sea navigation and travel was not considered to be safe. Ships were lost, crewmembers drowned, storms carried ships far from their original courses, and all of those events fueled the myths of deadly sirens that were often seen in open sea.

Another type of mermaid that is often referenced is the Siren. Although sirens are one of the most common types of mermaid that is recognized in modern day, it is thought that the mermaid stories influenced this creature in ways that were not meant to happen.

Sirens were often portrayed as beautiful women from the waist up with wings and a bird’s body for their bottom half. They would sing beautiful songs and lure ships towards dangerous rocks with their beauty and mysticism. When the ships inevitably crashed, they would feast on the bodies of the sailors – though some stories suggest that these beings were simply content to kill the sailors and leave.

There was also another form of siren that was maiden from the waist up and fish tailed from the waist down. This form of siren became increasingly popular as mermaid mythology spread throughout ancient Greece, this type of siren became more recognizable than their half avian counterparts. Unlike the Nereids, the Sirens were known to be omens of bad luck and they brought death and destruction with them wherever they went.

A search of the sea floor around their island would turn up entire ships, wrecked as they tried to get to the Sirens.

Yet, the Sirens may not have been evil by nature. Few stories describe the temptresses physically attacking humans, which leaves the possibility that their songs weren’t designed to kill. According to Nonnus,

re the Sirens took up their deadly singing career, they suffered several setbacks in life. They were cursed by both Demeter and the Muses and exiled to a small island, where they were forced to live alone.

It’s possible that the Sirens sang to avenge the wrongs against them. Abused by life, they decided to become monsters and destroy the lives of others.

It’s also possible that the Sirens sang to express their grief.

This truth was something that they needed to share, even if it was more painful than mortals could bear to hear.

Finally, the Sirens may have been desperately lonely and used their songs to tempt men to join them on their island. Although the island was littered in human remains, there were no signs that the Sirens killed men. Instead, the men might have died of starvation after keeping the Siren’s company for several weeks.

The Sirena has a beautiful and enchanting voice that can attract and hypnotize males, especially fishermen. Sirena sing to sailors and enchant them, distracting them from their work and causing them to walk off ship decks or cause shipwrecks. They sing with enchanting voices while hiding among the rocks by the shore. When the men hear these songs they are hypnotized and are abducted by the Sirena. Some folk traditions claim that the Sirena carry their victims under the sea, sacrificing them to the water deities. Other stories claim that the Sirena pretend to need rescuing from drowning, luring men into the sea, but proceed to squeeze the life out of any man who falls prey to their hoax.

A malevolent Sirena may tease and attract human males with its spellbinding songs. Occasional reports had Sirena grabbing seemingly hypnotized humans and drowning them or taking them under water. Another view had the tempted human chasing the Sirena into deep water until he drowned or that he had a heart attack upon seeing such an Engkanto and toppled into the water to his death.

Sirens are mythical creatures, of course, who prey on people of the opposite sex. In the old stories, sirens were generally women who lived on rocky islands and "sang" to sailors who sailed by. The sailors, who could not resist the siren's song, ran themselves to their deaths on the rocks that surrounded the shore, to caught up in the compulsion that the sirens used. No one can resist the call of a siren, with a few exceptions. In the Odessy, they plugged their ears. It is the most potent form of mind control. Nowadays, sirens stick to the mainland, the invention of airplanes limiting the number of sailors they have to prey upon. It is my understanding, though, that, much like selkies, sirens don't stray to far from the coast. It is possible even today, most sirens are female, though males are more common than in the old days.

These stunning creatures had heavenly voices and could sing a song so appeasing and soothing to the ear, especially that of a lonely sailor, that it could hypnotize and draw their audience straight toward them.

This caused the demise of many ships that would steer towards this seducing choir and sail their ships right onto rocky shores destroying vessel and crew.

This would become a feast for this enticing musical group of creatures. Any survivors would also simply be killed and devoured just like their shipmates.
