Chiwa Kikuchi is a woman of limited interests, yet she has managed to pursue a career that she loves rather than being stuck behind a desk every day for the rest of her life. During her freetime, Chiwa is an avid manga reader. She picked it up in her teenage years, like many of her fellow students, but as she grew older her fondness for it only intensified - so much so that her friends started referring to her as an 'Otaku'. Not that this put Chiwa off in the slightest. But when it was time to decide what she wanted to do with her life, she surprised everyone by choosing to study volcanology - something she was apparently as passionate about as manga.

Ever since, she has been studying at the Institute of Seismology and Volcanology in Hokkaido University. But during her time there, she has been given the opportunity to travel around the globe and visit all kinds of volcanoes: active, dormant and extinct alike. Despite her intense studies and career goals, she still makes time to read manga - but she has also taken up trying to make her own recently, as well as writing fanfictions every now and then, because deep down she is a fan girl and refuses to deny it.

• Before School
During the early hours of a particularly cold winter morning, Chiwa Kikuchi decided it was time to make her entrance into this world. At 2am, her mother’s waters broke and they rushed to the hospital. Four hours later, Chiwa was born. Healthy and beautiful, a perfect addition to the growing family. Taking a different stance to most of the families in Japan, Chiwa’s parents opted to have several children rather than just one or two. She was their fourth child and second daughter. Fortunately, thanks to her father’s position as a successful CEO for a publishing company, they could afford the expenses that came with a larger family. But from a young age, Chiwa was taught that coming from money and an upper class lifestyle didn’t make her better than anyone else. Her parents, having come from nothing, didn’t want their children to become spoiled or take things for granted.

• Elementary School
When she turned six years old, she started attending elementary school. For six years, she proved to her parents and teachers that she was an intelligent little girl. But she also started to develop more personality traits, positive ones, that indicated what kind of person she was going to grow up to be. Chiwa was always kind towards her classmates, offering to help them if they were struggling with their school work or cheer them up if they were upset. She wasn’t popular right away, but towards the end of elementary school, her peers started to see her as a ‘desirable’ person to hang out with. Even if she did struggle socially in terms of starting conversations or seem confident in herself, her compassion and empathy naturally drew people to her. Thanks to this, Chiwa never really went long without having company, both in and out of school hours.

• Junior High School
Entering Junior High School changed things for Chiwa. She was separated from most of her social circle and was forced to interact with people she hadn’t met before. Her lack of self-confidence meant she didn’t really make any initial interactions with these new and quite intimidating faces. For the next three years, she remained a bit of a loner. Besides making the odd friend or two, she kept to herself and focused on her studies, making it through Junior High with practically perfect grades. It was during this time that she started picking up an interest in Manga and Anime, thanks to the recommendation of one of her friends. Due to her lack of social interactions, Chiwa was able to dive into this interest a lot quicker than she normally would have done and was able to devote a lot more of her time to it than she would have done if she had the same number of friends as she did in Elementary school.

• High School
Aged fifteen, Chiwa was starting her first year in High School. At this point, she had been dubbed as an Otaku by her friends so was a bit nervous about interacting with all these new students, fearful they might judge her for her interests as Otakus weren’t seen as overly popular/good connections. Or at least, that was the impression she had been given. Regardless, she made an effort this time to get to know her classmates. Bringing in homemade cookies and sweets, she introduced herself to her peers whilst offering the treats she’d made out to them. This earned her a lot of friends within the first few days of her first year at High School. It didn’t take long for Chiwa to become the cute, helpful and sweet student that she’d been in Elementary School. The majority of her classmates seemed fond of her, and even came to her aid when older students bullied her for being an Otaku.

» ᴀᴅᴜʟᴛʜᴏᴏᴅ

• University
Having finished High School, passing with flying colours, Chiwa surprised everyone by choosing to opt into a specialised university and study Volcanology. Most had assumed because of her love of manga and her talent for drawing and writing she would want to go down that route. But Chiwa had a lesser known, but equally passionate interest in Volcanology. She wanted to learn as much as she could about one of nature’s most destructive forces, try to understand it better and maybe even contribute to the discoveries that were being made in the field. Specifically when it came to warning systems, or ways to save lives when volcanoes suddenly erupted with little warning. Now, she is studying with those who are also determined to do the same as her, as well as travelling the world to see volcanoes in person during her studies.
