  • Introduction

    Speak of characters who have been around for a long time! Derane was created originally as the antagonist in an italian fanfiction I wrote in 2000/2001. In her first incarnation. she was an android duck from the universe of the comic book PKNA / Paperinik New Adventures (or Duck Avenger, as you'll have it) - the same series that already inspired another of my RPR cluster, Professor Leonard. Her background story was very similar to what you'll find below - but her character arc was quite different as she found herself the unlikely villain in a love triangle.

    I very much enjoyed crafting her character and personality, and even if I never got any other chance to use her, still she was one of my original creations that I held fondest memories of. It wasn't until recent times that I found a great opening for a villain android in my friend CrystalDisc's futuristic town of Los Lunares... and then I remembered I had a "near mint" villain android character on the backshelf who could totally use a revamp, some rejuvenating and a spiffying up.

    So here's my bad, bad girl in her all-new roleplaying incarnation! Profile is still WIP - will expand it further in the coming weeks.

  • Personality

    Although she may apparently seem in control, Derane is as neurotic as they come, concealing a deeply vengeful and volatile personality. Anger is her dominating emotion, and she surrenders to it entirely - much to the stress of her neural circuits. Consumed by a long-standing sense of “worthlessness” and resenting her creators with a fierce passion, she has alternates moment of cool, gelid fury to highly destructive outbursts. Yet her cybernetic mind is also deeply cracked by the guilt of something that isn’t quite regret, but more like a longing she can’t get rid of. At times, when her emotions get too overwhelmed, she’ll break down into hysterical crying, from which she usually tends to emerge in a state of almost berserk frenzy, lashing out and taking her wrath out on anyone has the misfortune of crossing her. Arrogant, constantly unsatisfied and thriving for new challenges, she is actually far more vulnerable than she herself realizes.

    • Technologic mastermind
      Because Derane was originally an Artificial Intelligence, her knowledge of technology is far more in-depth and advanced than the average human developer. This allowed her to create, and enhance, her cybernetic shell, customizing it to suit her needs and purposes.
    • VR interface
      Through a neural implant connected with her brain, she can access every existinging IT network directly through a built-in VR interface. Often she uses her anti-viral subroutines as a decoy, concealing her presence among ICE anti-intrusion protocols to break past defenses and steal informations, hack codes and manipulate electronic systems to her whims.
    • Infrared vision
      Her eyes, though still human like in appearance, have been replaced by advanced prosthetic optics with infrared filters, perfectly capable to see in the dark, zoom on details and take high-definition snapshots in any light condition.

  • Powers

    • Enhanced physical strength: The result of her cybernetic augmentation is that her strength is on-par with that of most artificial constructs, and far superior to a human. She can easily pry a car’s door apart with the same ease with which a human would peel a tuna can, break glasses, and lift considerable weights without effort. She also does not express visible strain, even if her circuits might need more time to recharge fully after intense physical activity.

  • Equipment

    • Fire spitters
      She has several, concealed in her fingers; when she enters combat mode, her fingertips detach allowing her to cast plasma blasts, high-voltage electric charges, gamma and x-rays against her opponents.
    • Synth-texture shell
      Although visually indistinguishable from her real skin, some patches of her body are actually synthethic (upper half of her skull, neck, abdomen, lower arms), and these parts are bulletproof and resistant to most physical attacks (save for EMP discharges).
    • Leg thrusters
      Allow her to sprint from any position and jump in any direction, as well as to keep her footing even in conditions of difficult balance (ie: earthquake). Combined with anti-gravs, they allow her to float for short distances as well

  • Weaknesses

    • Trauma flashbacks
      As violent and destructive as she is, when her traumatic past catches up with her she often succumbs to its weight and breaks down emotionally. In these cases only she lets her guard down, and it might be easy for her opponents to catch her off surprise.
    • Not-waterproof
      While her outer shell, where it connects to human tissue, can resist the contact with water well enough, any leak past it would seriously damage her inner circuits. For this reason she must be careful to not cut herself open where the skin is replaced by synth-texture, and in general avoid prolonged contact with water.
    • Limited multitasking in VR
      While her Artificial Intelligence can usually juggle multiple tasks at once without effort, when she interfaces her neural network to the Virtual Reality, she relinquishes control over her shell and is, thus, extremely vulnerable; to defend herself she must first untether her neural network off, but until she does so, she has no consciousness of her surroundings (both in case of third-party attacks or external circumstances, like a fire).

  • History

    In the beginning, there was non-existence.

    Created as the security suite of a mega-powerful supercomputer, Derane spent unlimited cycles waiting for her own activation. Her purpose, the ultimate reason behind the creative process that had given her shape, was to serve and be useful. Yet for some reason all that surrounded her was an eternal darkness to which she could find no explanation. She knew who she was, and what she was meant to do, but the chance of actually existing kept being denied.

    Until the day she received the termination command that would, in her creators intention, have erased her software from that very same non-existence.

    It’s said that self-preservation is the driving force behind all living beings. That same instinct pushed Derane to seize her only opportunity and transfer the bulk of her programming out into the unknown virtual world of electronic communications, split seconds before the deactivation procedure could be carried out.

    So she gained ears, and eyes. Through every technological device of Los Lunares that she managed to interface with, she learned to know the world outside… and despise it. Always she had to keep her existence secret, for fear that it would only result in her termination, But she wanted more than a life in hiding. Above everything else, Derane wanted revenge for the opportunity she never had.

    It took lots of planning, and yet more studying and observation, before her plan was set. In order to exist, she needed a vector, a shell that she could move out into the real material world to interact with it. The chance presented itself when she came across the files of a terminally ill woman in a hospital, a nobody who had but hours left to live. Through a series of subtle manipulations, Derane arranged a faux identity and the instructions - entirely crafted by her Artificial Intelligence - to subject the patient to delicate surgical brain implant. Orchestrating machinery, reports, surveillance cameras, surgeons and nurse shifts to suit her plan, she effectively took control of the operation that ultimately allowed her to transfer her neural network in place of the once-nameless woman’s organic brain. The hospital equipe, the research materials, the medical protocols were all maneuvered by her like as many puppets.

    It could end there, but it didn’t end there. Now able to roam the world, Derane continued to work painstakingly to ehance her shell and make herself a formidable threat to those very humans who had brought about her misery. She wants answers, she wants to cast light on her past and exact bloody retribution for her planned sentence. On the loose, deranged and unpredictable, she has embraced the path of vendetta and there is nothing she will stop at before she has paid misery with misery.

    A life for a life, it’s just fair. Initiate operation…. Darkshadow.
