Firefly of House Dunlaine
/ˈfī(ə)rˌflī/
Namesake: Any nocturnal beetle of the family Lampyridae,
characterized by a soft body with a light-producing organ at the rear of the abdomen.
Born into a working family in the heart of Kasuria, Firefly was named for her uniquely luminescent freckling, which at night reminded her mother of the fireflies in their garden. The pair were known locally for their perfumes and scented candles, a trade she taught her daughter from a very young age. Things would not always remain so pleasant, however, as her mother was lost to a cancerous mass when she was in her mid-teens, leaving her in the care of her widower father. Giving into his despair, he leaned heavily on alcohol and gambling to fill the void, wasting away whatever coin his daughter could rummage up with his antics. The thrall's fall came when he overestimated his hand in a game of cards, betting not only all of his fortune, but his daughter's hand on what he thought was a sure thing. His opponent accepted this bet, then squashed him like the pest he was on society. However, when Firefly came to stay with him, his intentions for her were not as simple as marriage. The contract her father had signed in his drunken stupor? Signed away any rights she had as a free person, and made her his property.
Though she stayed in his care for a few years, eventually he grew bored of abusing her and she traded hands a few more times, learning to accept her station and a few new hobbies along the way. A fresh arrival to Guildereim, Firefly is uncertain of, but optimistic for her future.
