History Come to Life
Gabriel de Avilés was born in 1735 in Vic in the province of Barcelona. The fourth son of José de Avilés, 1st Marquis of Avilés under Charles IV, intendente of Aragon and Valencia, and of Carmen del Fierro. Being the fourth son meant that Gabriel was pampered by his mother, but nearly forgotten by his father. Gabriel was never meant to rise above his station as the fourth son and live in the shadow of his older brothers. The first born would get the title, the money, the accolades. Second born would feel a little bit of the sun on his face as he would take over should something happen to the first-born son, but for the third and fourth, they were just there.
Because of the lack of prospects for a wealthy future, Gabriel entered the military at a young age. It was difficult for him at first. He had been raised mainly by his mother and the only fighting he had done were with his older brothers who were going to win regardless as they were so much older and stronger. But what he lacked in physical strength, he made up for in diplomacy. Well-spoken and well read, Gabriel found his niche in the officer's ranks. It was clear early on that he wasn't suited for warfare but could serve the army as a Spanish military officer. Gabriel enjoyed being an officer. He gave orders so much better than he had been at following them. He was a judicious leader and eventually became one of the colonial administrators in the Americas.
He was so successful during his time in the Americas that he was given the post as a cavalry instructor in 1762 in Chile. After two years at Arauco, he was sent to Peru as sub-inspector general of the army. In 1763, the anti-Spanish revolt erupted. The rebels had initial successes, and there were fears that the insurrection would engulf the entire viceroyalty. Gabriel, then a colonel, was sent with a Spanish force to the defense of Cusco. The reinforcements arrived the day before the rebels began a siege of the city. The rebel force was estimated to be as many as 60,000 men. The situation was not easy for the Spanish; they feared not only the besieging force, but also the possibility of an uprising of the Indigenous within the city itself.
According to the history books, this is where Gabriel de Avilés was killed by a trap that was laid by the Indigenous people of the city. It was written that they saw Gabriel as the head of the snake; cut off the head and the body dies. However, death did not come for Gabriel on that day. His life would be forever altered and, in his opinion, for the better.
