Nancy Holcombe

Ⱄ Description
Fragile, delicate. Words that one might associate with glass, or something easily broken. But in Nancy’s case, those are the words that have been used to describe her throughout her life - and almost always with a negative meaning behind them. Pathetically petite. That’s another phrase she has been branded with for as long as she can remember. Silky pale. The list goes on and on.

Her father views her as a disgrace and an eyesore, someone who has no right being born into nobility. Her full stature is a mere five foot and two inches, making her considerably smaller than the average woman her age. And her frame is one that is very slender, rather close to a weight that could be considered unhealthy. This is due to a lack of proper nourishment and variety in her diet, all because her father has decreed she is not worthy of finer foods.

She bears little to no resemblance to her father, having only inherited his eyes which are described as a shade of oceanic blue. Nancy’s eyes have thick eyelashes and are slightly hooded and almond-like in shape. They give her a soft and sweet appearance, which is emphasised further by her heart-shaped facial structure and plump, rosy lips, all of which she inherited from her mother.

In addition to these features, Nancy also seems to have inherited her mother’s hair. The locks are a shade of a dark chocolate brown, thick and silky in texture. When it comes to length, Nancy's hair is rather long, coming to a stop at the same point where her belly button rests. On either side of her forehead, at the front of her scalp, there are patches of pure white hair which give her a unique appearance, one that her father deems unsightly and ill suited towards someone of noble blood. Because of this, she is often kept away from the various gatherings that take place in the Holcombe estate - so the guests do not see her. In an attempt to please her father, Nancy will go to great efforts to style her hair in a manner that hides these white streaks. But it is never good enough for him.

Ⱄ Scent & Aura
Unlike a lot of nobles, who have access to expensive and exotic ingredients, Nancy bathes with simple and cheap soaps. So her ‘scent’ (for those who perhaps have sensitive noses) is a very subtle one consisting of a mix of honey and vanilla. As for her 'aura' (where the use of magic is involved) the outline of Nancy's aura is a luminous and brilliant white. But everything within it is darker, consisting mostly of deep greys but there are areas engulfed in solid black, appearing jagged around their edges.

Ⱄ Voice & Speech
Nancy is a very softly spoken young woman, and she was also born with a stutter that she has not been able to grow out of or control - despite numerous attempts to do so. This stutter, however, often reflects the kind of mindset she is in. When she is calm, the stutter is very minimal and only typically occurs doing the start of her sentences. However, when she is flustered, upset or afraid the stutter is far more present and noticable. Her father constantly ridiculed her for her stutter, so now she is terrified that others will perceive her as a pathetic fool who cannot even speak properly.

Ⱄ Scars & Markings
Then there is the matter of the ‘worst’ of Nancy’s physical features. According to her father, that is. Her skin is mostly pale and clear, thanks to a lack of exposure to sunlight, however on her forehead and legs she has patches of skin that are lighter than her normal complexion. Additionally, the patch of fair skin on her forehead seems to ‘spread’ to her hair, which is mostly a dark shade of chocolate brown, but towards the front she has sections that are white/light grey in colour. This is called Piebaldism, a condition she inherited from her mother's side of the family.

Whilst Nancy does not have scars in the traditional sense, she has 'mana scars'. This term refers to the remains of mana in the body that linger where old injuries once were, before they were healed by magic. So whilst her skin is pristine and free from any scars to the naked eye, a healer with the gift of using and channeling mana would be able to see her back is riddled with numerous mana scars. They appear as black lines within someone's aura, so the areas within Nancy's that are pure black are a result of her prolongued experience to physical abuse and repetitive healing. Her scars are located mostly around her back and shoulders, but a few can be found on her arms and cheeks.

These items are not always on Nancy's person throughout the day, but are considered to be her most treasured possessions. As such, they will be taken with her if she either relocates permanently, or is required to temporarily stay somewhere else for more than one day.

Ⱄ Demeanour
To others, Nancy comes across as a rather fragile and timid young woman. She struggles to make or maintain eye contact with people, tending to keep her gaze towards the ground - especially when she is nervous or afraid. She will physically express her anxiety through various different mannerisms, such as gripping the fabric of her dress, or playing with strands of her hair. Other times she will wrap her arms around herself. Despite her rather skittish nature, Nancy does her best to present herself as a proper and polite young woman. Her posture is always straight and correct, and she will address someone by their official title, rather than using their name. This is mostly due to her fear of offending or upsetting someone, and getting punished as a result. However, it's rare to see her willingly conversing with people, due to her insecurity over her stutter.

Ⱄ Interests
As someone who has spent much of her life on her own, and with minimal interaction with other people, Nancy’s hobbies and interests tend to be more focused around solitary means. For example, she is a rather avid reader and will happily spend hours in the library at a time. She also has a fondness for animals, particularly cats, and finds herself enjoying their company more than other humans. Something most people are not aware of is how curious Nancy is about the world beyond the walls she’s called home. She wants to travel, but is terrified of doing so because of how easy it is for her to fall ill and thinks she would just be a burden to those she’s travelling with. So, in an attempt to satisfy her curiosity, she has taken to learning new languages from around the world.

Ⱄ Motivations
At her core, Nancy’s sole desire is to be needed. To be good enough for someone so that they want her to be around. But she has convinced herself that because of her flaws, they will never accept her for who she truly is. So, in an attempt to prevent this, she will do her best to conceal and repress her emotions and ‘tailor’ herself to be what they need her to be. On multiple occasions, Nancy has pushed herself beyond her limits to try and please her father. She is terrified that if people were to learn the truth about her, and realise how broken she actually is, then she will be abandoned and forever remain alone in this world. Every day, she tries to find a way to be useful to people, so they do not leave.

Ⱄ Religion
Nancy is, like the vast majority of her family, a christian. However, she is not as ‘intense’ with her beliefs as others might be. She will pray before she eats, and attends church every Sunday. It is Nancy’s belief that God would not want her to look to Him to solve all her problems, but only to seek His guidance or council when she has exhausted all other means first. So she will do her best to find the solutions herself before praying to Him for help. Forgiveness is very important to her. Hence why she has never spoken out against her father. She knows that it is not her place to judge him, only God’s. Her beliefs are traditional, but not strictly so. She is open-minded and accepting of others who might not share the same thoughts or beliefs as she does, and does not judge or shun them.

Ⱄ Self-Worth
As a result of the treatment she has endured at the hands of her father, and his staff, Nancy has an incredibly low opinion of herself and her worth. It is very common for her to hyperfixate on her flaws, and be reminded of what her father has said about them whenever a small problem arises, or if someone seems to be even the slightest bit upset or angry with her. She has convinced herself that everyone sees her flaws as burdens, and that she must be a burden because of them. This has made her rather paranoid and insecure about her place amongst others, or rather how secure she is in these relationships. Her happiness is very much attached to the idea of being needed by someone else, and believes she is only important if she meets their needs.

Ⱄ Traits
Nancy is a very curious, intelligent and open-minded young woman with a talent for learning new things rather quickly. She can be shy and somewhat naive, given her lack of experience beyond the walls of her home - making it rather easy to fool her when she isn't thinking clearly. Compassionate and dedicated to the people around her, she does her best to ensure they are happy whilst not very rarely thinking of herself in the process. She will sacrafise her own health to help someone else, or work towards a goal of bettering herself to be what they need her to be. Paranoid and insecure, she constantly fears the people she loves will leave her if they no longer have a use for her. Easily flustered and self-conscious, Nancy doesn't have a lot of self-esteem and often doubts her own abilities, or questions her judgement when making decisions.
