She had the awkward tenderness of someone who has never been loved
and is forced to improvise ________________ Hazel is one smart cookie. She comes from a middle-class family: her mother is a kindergarten teacher, her father is a family lawyer, her two brothers are both in the car industry. If there is one thing, that means a lot for her mother, is the families reputation. What does the lady down at the cheese aisle, think about the Fanes? What does the neighbors think about them? That mindset has caused Hazel a whole lot of trouble. Her mother is mostly focused on her two brothers, who are always causing trouble, and then she expects Hazel to fix it all. Hazel is pretty sure, none in her family even knows what she is doing, how smart she really is. Hazel knows, that she has to created healthy boundaries with her families, but she has never really learned to say no. " I felt there was no point in telling anyone anything that was happening inside me" Hazel is a people pleaser – she bends her personality to get along with everyone. She often puts other people’s needs before her own. She’s the kind of friend who will watch a boring foreign movie about cannibalism, instead of her own favorite movie, just to make a friend happy. She wills herself to believe that changing her personality figuring out the “Hazel” that people want is half-superpower, half-how she excels at her job at her job as a fake girlfriend. She’s rarely truthful with anyone, not even the people who are closest to her. She is terrified of people seeing the real her and deciding that she is not good enough and leave her in the dust. The real Hazel, is rather sarcastic, has a dry sense of humor and confident in herself. To make ends meet, she works as a fake girlfriend, where she tailors her personality to fit the needs of her clients, something she has always been good at. She is a naturally analytical person. She likes to analyze people, see what kind of person that specifically person would take a liking to. " I am trying to make myself digestible. I am trying to make myself easy to love " Hazel has always had a rather cold outlook on love. Her parents don’t love her unless she does something for them. She knows that love will always be conditional. She did once give it a chance, she was fake dating a friend, but she ended up falling in love with him. She convinced herself, that the feelings where mutual, but as soon as her ex-friend got what he wanted, he dumped her. Threw her out, let her out to dry all alone. Ever since that one experience, Hazel has kind of ruled out love. She would rather focus on her future (she is taking a PhD in microbiology & Immunology at Stanford university. If she must be completely honest with herself, she is lonely. She often occupies herself with her works, and her side hustle, just so she isn’t left alone with her own thoughts about loneliness. |
