The Underdark... its a cruel place to be raised, from birth Nadal was made to serve his house in whatever possible, at the age of 5 his first job was tending to the slave pens, it was a cruel environment for a young child... thats what most would say but to a Drow, beating or breaking in a new slave was quite normal. From 5-8, Nadal worked the slave pens and was taught how to extract information from prisoners... On a good day he simply fed them poison.. on a bad day a slave broke free from his chains and took him hostage in a futile chance of escape.. Though when the matter was settled... which was normally quite fast, Nadal would receive "punishment" for letting himself be captured.
At age 9 he was sent off to a militaristic school in order to train his body and mind, it was there that he suffered the most. Every day his body was worked so hard he thought he was going to die... the punishments were... creative to say the least. Physical pain was a luxury... the mental punishments were the worst... and exhausting. Bonds of friendship were used against you... If you messed up it was quite possible that your cohort would suffer or possibly even be turned against you. On two occasions Nadal had a friend try to slit his throat in his sleep at a instructors request.
Thankfully it all ended on his 20th birthday.... The blooding. A drow coming of age ritual in where one was sent out to hunt down and kill an intelligent creature from the surface world, though in some special cases one could be tasked with hunting something within the underdark. Nadal was one such case.... He was given an impossible task... Kill a Mind Flayer or as some might know they by... an Illithid. A monstrous creature with psychic abilities that could rip apart ones mind in a blink of an eye.... though that was bliss compared to the alternative... ceremorphisis.
