With the greenest of thumbs and a strong aura of pollen following her every step, Ophelia had always been drawn towards the natural world despite her rigid, big-city upbringing. While her other siblings thrived academically, eventually becoming CEO's and Biochemists, she would prefer to play in the dirt, craft little flower crowns and bracelets and study the beautiful language of flowers. She always counted down the days until her family would take their yearly visit back to her mother's birthplace of Hadong, North Korea where she could breath in that fresh country air and feel real grass between her toes.
Any attempt to trod the path her parents wanted never went too well. An uncompleted Masters in Environmental Science, a 9-5 desk job that she quit after 2 months, an engagement to a man they actually approved of broken off in a blink. She could never be what they wanted her to be, no matter how hard she tried. She doesn't have much contact with them anymore, except periodically sending money to her mother who moved back to Korea after her dad's passing and the occasionally awkward catch-up dinner with her siblings. But she is more than content to not have to deal with their stifling comments and criticism as much anymore. It felt freeing.
It was almost by complete luck that she was handed Bianh Blooms. A tiny floral shop just off the main street that had been open since 1958, owned by her elderly Vietnamese landlady who allowed Ophelia to live in her first solo-apartment for free while she took up the job as her carer and companion. It went that way for a couple of years and Ophelia had basically became like a granddaughter to the older woman who unfortunately was getting too old to manage her own business and had more needs than Ophelia could help with. So she decided she would move into a nursing home, and give her precious store to Ophelia.
Even years later, the quant little shop continues to thrive under her delicate touch and natural sweetness that often succeeds in driving sales. She is content with her simple life despite still being stuck inside the city- she gets up, goes to work at the shop, stays until closing, and spends her one day off cosied inside her apartment. Though she feels satisfied with her life now, she still has a little coin jar on her kitchen counter that is slowly growing labelled 'country cottage'.
