  • Origin of Witchcraft

    The earliest traces of magic can be found as far back as there are records. It wasn’t always called witchcraft, and it wasn’t always seen as evil. In fact, many used to admire witches. Worship them as if they were Gods themselves. Maybe that’s why the Gods themselves stole the land magic away. Forced those without ancestral magic in their veins to give up their practice.

    Centuries later, upon the rediscovery and subsequent panic about witches, there were massive hunts. Hundreds of witches were killed. Burned at the stake. Many more were humans who were falsely accused. Their blood fed the ground and alighted it with magic once more, albeit different than before. This magic was dark. Tainted by the sins of the murderers who spilled it. It poisoned the ground for miles, preventing farmers from growing crops and destroying plenty of ecosystems. Blood magic.

    Any witches around knew to leave. Messing with that kind of magic was risky at best, and far more than simply deadly at worst. But for those who stayed, those who survived, they were blessed with a gift far greater than one could have ever hoped to imagine.

  • Powers/Vulnerabilities

    Ancient Chalice
    There is a chalice that has been lost for centuries, rumored to be hidden by ancient witches to prevent the magic of their coven being stolen. It’s said that if a witch were to go in search of this chalice to voluntarily relinquish her magic, the spell obscuring it would fade until eventually the chalice was able to be sensed again by all witches, most of whom would rightfully want to keep it protected.
    Poison Bite
    A vampire or demon bite acts as poison to a witch’s magic, but isn’t automatically deadly. Once the venom is removed by the liver, any form of ancestral or blood magic will return. Witches that have been bitten cannot use land magic.
    Mortality
    Having the power of magic is a wondrous gift. With it, a witch could feel invincible. Of course, they wouldn’t be. They may slow their aging or even give themselves the ability to prevent sickness or injury, but eventually all witches die. When this happens, their magic is released back into the Earth and given to the next in their bloodline until they have no heirs.
    Ancestral Magic
    Ancestral magic cannot be stolen from a witch, except through a poison bite for a temporary time. It is the strongest kind of magic. Vivian currently has almost no control over her ancestral magic.
    Blood Magic
    Blood magic is chaotic and destructive. It also always requires large sacrifices in order to perform. All curses are performed with blood magic. Blood magic can be performed by any witch, but those with ancestral blood magic are far more powerful. Vivian has limited control over blood magic.
    Land Magic
    Most witches use only the magic from the land, drawing on ancient witches power that was never passed on. Land magic can only be used for small enchantments, and results in far less unexpected or dangerous consequences. Vivian has amazing control over land magic.
