“My wedding night was a tragedy, I lost my mortality. I deserve to die, but I won’t quit until every one of these vampiric scum pay for what they did to me.”

Fleetfang was a village known for its strong citizens, home to the most skeptical. Across the borders of the town was a dark forest, which housed various creatures of unknown origin. The townsfolk were prepared in every measure; even children were given pocket knives or rusty pans to wield if any creature dared to cross the threshold. It wasn’t bravery that fueled their willingness to fight, it was fear. Fear that one day their loved ones would be taken away, snatched in the confines of the night, never to be seen again. This paranoia never made them ponder the sanctity of their own brethren. A town so well protected that there wasn’t any reason to suspect that their own neighbor could be a beast.
Men, women, children, and even the elderly were prepared to fight by any means to protect themselves from being devoured, or even worse, being turned into disgusting, violent monsters. When they weren’t sharpening their blades for the next attack, they would live their lives as would any other. The shops would be overflowing with produce, the streets bustling with playful children and lively conversations from overworked mothers. Bakers rush to place their fresh loaves into ovens, while blacksmiths clang their large metal hammers against the virgin steel.
Among the cobbled streets walked a fair maiden with hair as dark as the skin of oak and her eyes a sparkling green, like the grass in the meadow covered in morning dew. She was so beautiful that many bachelors would beam at even the mention of her name, thinking perhaps they could have a chance. The women of the town did not loathe her, but rather wished for her good fortune and that she would find a husband and build a strong household. Once the maiden came of age, she was charmed by a man who swayed her heart with the crafty fingering of his lute. This was to be her future husband, her partner for all eternity even after death.
The night arrived where she would soon be wed, though instead of a large carriage and pristine horses to carry her, she requested that she ride alone so that she may take in the beauty of the night in solace. When she arrived at the altar, she found no guests, no food or drink, only a figure standing in the moonlight, placed perfectly between the arch of everlasting love. However, this was not her lover, but a crude imitation of him in the shadows. She approached the altar under the false pretense of her lover waiting in the solitude of the night, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. With a swift movement, the stranger pulled her into a dance, one of which she could not pry away from. The dance was passionate, alluring, but what was a hypnotic sensation turned abruptly into that of a burning ache.
The maiden, quick to her feet, pushed her assailant away, only to find the remains of her love under the steps of the altar. Her scream broke the eerie silence of the sleeping town. Not only was she in immense pain, but she had just witnessed a horrible scene. She ran to the village with warning in her breath, her cries overwhelming the streets and echoing between infrastructures. A crowd circled in the town square, armed for whatever dangers awaited them. When the maiden arrived, they did not see her anymore, but a bloodsoaked nightmare standing before them. Her blade was never drawn, but her eyes were filled with something of the unknown.
“That’s her! She killed the groom!” Yelled out a voice from within the crowd. Word must have spread fast, perhaps one of the lookouts witnessed what had happened and had mistaken her for the attack. Pleading was of no use, and the villagers would spare no expense in protecting their kin. Even her own flesh and blood would warn her against ever stepping foot in the town again.
With this, she fled. Her heart was broken, her future stolen from her in the blink of an eye. She was furious. Her training as a las would bode well in her future. She had become one of the very things she grew to fear. With her newfound power flowing in her veins, she would no longer be afraid of what lies in the dark, but rather…
She would make them fear her.
