  • Rueger was a nobody. A little boy from a small town with parents who expected too much from him. Perfection is what they wanted. And Rueger couldn't give them that.

    Rueger was born an only child to a lower noble household tucked away from the capitol and positioned within walking distance from a small village. Everyone knew everyone in that village and it was where the boy was raised. From an outsiders point of view, he was a child full of love and humor. But behind closed doors his parents berated him for not being good enough. He wasn't naturally gifted with magic nor swordsmanship. When he was little it was for not having enough friends. As he grew older it shifted to his grades not being good enough. Rueger's parents even dismissed his ambition for practicing swordsmanship in an effort to better himself. No matter if he practiced till his hands bled late into the night, it was never enough. He might as well just give it up.

    But he didn't.

    As he got older he began butting heads with his parents more frequently. And then just before he reached full maturity, his parents had enough. Rueger was claimed to be the disappointment of his family, unworthy of being the heir. He was cast out from the household and his noble status was stripped of him by his father. According to his parents they'd rather have no heirs than someone who amounts to nothing.

    Rueger wasn't particularly upset about it— or maybe he just hid his melancholy behind a false smile. He stayed in the village for a short amount of time, but eventually decided if he stayed there that he'd never accomplish anything that'd be of worth to his parents.

    Although he claimed he was going adventuring and dungeon raiding to earn praise from his parents, Rueger wasn't actually sure if that's really why he was doing it. He maintained a cheerful and goofy front for his comrades and remained loyal and fierce in battle all the while questioning his own accomplishments every step of the way.

    These words were painfully true when Rueger, along with a group of his comrades were approached by a small clan offering an alliance to raid a particularly difficult dungeon. The payout would be good and there were even rumors of a mythical artifact inside.

    If Rueger could be part of the team who cleared the difficult dungeon and got his share— maybe then his parents would see his worth. With hope in his heart him and his comrades followed the clan to the dungeon.

    Rueger would never forget that day. It was a gloomy day. Rain poured from the sky and fog made the forest seem denser then it truly was. If Rueger could describe what happened next in one word, it would be Betrayal. One of his own comrades had turned their back to Rueger and his companion's while the clan they'd followed slaughtered them.

    Ruegar was the last one alive. The years of slaving away at practicing swordsmanship came to good use, but it just wasn't enough. Nothing he did was enough. Rueger was cut down that day. It was a feeling he'd never forget. The heat that filled his body as his throat was sliced. The feeling of his own blood running down his chest and him choking on it.

    He died.

    But nothing is at it seems.

    It could've been the wish for vengeance or maybe a higher power that intervened, but Rueger woke up. The rain had long dried but as he clamored up he beheld the scene before him. His comrades slain, laying in dried pools of blood and beaten behind recognition. For some time he mourned them, loitering around the scene in a state of denial and confusion.

    And it was in this state when he realized he'd gained a new form of magic.

    Necromancy.

    After raising one of his teammates by accident, he slowly came to terms with his new ability. With the fact he was truly dead, and that the ability had simply awoken after his demise. But Rueger was still lost. What would he do now?

    He travelled. Never staying in one place too long, he quickly learned to cover up the scar on his neck to avoid stares and suspicion. Technically he could be considered evil, even if it wasn't a personality trait of his. Necromancy certainly wasn't holy. Occasionally he also feels disgust at his situation, sometimes even wrath. It's now been months since his death and the awakening of his new prowess, but he refuses to use it.

    Relying solely on his sword, Rueger made a new name for himself and built up a good reputation as a mercenary.

    But Rueger still hasn't decided if vengeance is worth it. He hasn't decided if he'll chase after his parents praise anymore, or focus on finding happiness himself.

    Still, he is just a lost mercenary.
