Description

With the right side of his face being wholly black, with a large green orb for an eye, he is often shot at on sight. He dresses as normally as possible, and tends to move openly, for he has no fear of dying.

Oh, how to describe an enigma...

You walk into the room, hidden deep within the subway. It appears that someone lived here once. They had a bed, oven and even a small farm, deep underneath the dry ground. Upon the bed, is a book. You step forward, and open it...

A long time ago, in gods great wasteland, I was chosen by the fates to be the bearer of many a man’s troubles. Chosen, at the age of a toddler… I dunno what kinda child I was. I aint got a memory of my mother’s face, as she looked at me sadly whilst being shot with plasma weapons. I don’t even want none of that heart-tugging shit. In fact, my first memory is of some robot with a metric shit tonne of letters after his name. He was hospitable enough… if his bedside manner was anything to go by. This is, of course, the opinion of a guy who was strapped to a table and pumped with stem cells and essential proteins via a needle for 12 years by that very same hunk of tin and copper.

I was able to access a computer before I left that cursed place. Turns out, those robots were programmed to create a human capable of surviving radiation levels akin to a nuke, no matter the consequences. These commands were pre-war, of course… they never got told to stop trying. I can only assume they went out, grabbing creatures from the wastes, and blending them with me, and god knows what else… all though... I know one of the other subjects they were splicing.

T’was a Molerat. I called him Freddie… he seemed to like it. See, they must o’ been pumping him full of Buffout or Deathclaw cells, or something. Eventually… he got to big for the cell. And by big, I mean large as a house (literally, not metaphorically). Busted the whole thing down around our heads… he must of smelt the Molerat cells in me, ‘cause he seemed kinda protective of me… like I was his pup or summin’… by the by, we got out –after I accessed the computer, of course- and ran our arses out of there. There were these weird pylons, I remember, but they didn’t give us much trouble. I just got a tickle. Freddie was to large to give a uhh… well, a rats arse.

Freddie got taken down by a rather pissed off (and very irradiated) Deathclaw, two years later. By this time, I was 18, and had accrued my fair share of scars, and didn’t feel like getting more. Two days of cat and mouse with the occasional close call, there was one less Deathclaw in the world. The plan was to make him charge me, then I would sidestep, and he would go over… suffice to say, step two failed, and I went with him. On a complete side note though, Deathclaws are surprisingly good cushions. I only broke one of my ankles in the landing.

It was perhaps… a year after those days of fear, and adrenalin, that I came across a town. I don’t know where it was, or what it was called… mostly because I had to limp away with a .308 in my left ankle (Ankle injuries seem to be common for me). Now, keep in mind, I hadn’t really gotten close to a fellow human yet. For the most part, I was walking through the HIGHLY deserted bits o’ nowhere. Any humans I had seen, were raiders. I could see enough blood and gore in the area to put them in the same book as Deathclaws at that point.

Point is, I didn’t know that my eye was screwed up. I had no reference. The delightfully busty young girl I saw on the edges of that town… she knew I was screwed up. Calling “Monster!” before I could blink… I got a reference at that point. Unfortunately, she got her Daddy. He was a decent shot… decent enough to try and shoot a kid who looked to be eight years old with a fucked up eye and was running away, anyway. I mean, c’mon. What kinda morals do the wastes have these days!

From then on, I was a lil nervous around society… started looking for conversation within. I guess I’d always had conversations within, but they were with Freddie, I was guessing what his reply was… it was different. This time… it was the start of a chain of events that created Tenebras, my own dark contradiction…
It was dark, I was cold, and I had unwittingly wandered into a library, in god knows where. I found a book there, and for god knows what reason, picked it up. I couldn’t read it… but there had to be someone who could, eh?

Morning came, and I continued on again, eventually arriving in what I can only assume was Mexico. Or what’s left of it. I saw a house, laying somewhat in ruins, and headed towards it. Shelter, and all that goodness, eh? I was never expecting to find life within those walls.

I dunno why I talked to her… she was different like me, I guess. There, I met a nice ghoul lady… called herself “Jeanette”. Used to be a teacher, way back… she still had the skills. After some patching up and confusion, she became my adopted mother. Taught me civilisation, and language. Taught me English, and Latin. Taught me to be as bright as the morning for which I was named… Mane.

At the age of twenty (Whilst I looked 16), she told me to run away, to take the .357 revolver that would come to save my life many a time, and just run… I regret to tell you, that I did. I ran, even as I looked back and heard the screams, the menacing laughter of a dozen men fulfilling their lust for blood…
I ran my arse maybe, three miles before I stopped. Went east, then south again, hoping to avoid the raiders… for once, the fates liked me it seems. I found a caravan. An English speaking one. All I had on me were a Latin dictionary and “Jay” (Jay was the name I had given the gun, in my teachers honour), so trade was outta the question. I was desperate, stupid, starving and thirsty, so of course I tried to ambush them. I couldn’t see a single weapon when I stepped out of the rubble, gun raised. I saw a lot of guns once the caravan saw me.

Now, I said the fates were being nice, didn’t I? Well, hold on to your hat my friend, because get this; I experienced heart-wrenching, somewhat hormonal, cliché, love on first sight. She didn’t scream at the gun blatantly pointed in her direction. She just looked at me, and blinked. She wasn’t even scared of my eye, or the blood on my thigh (An unfortunate event involving a bloatfly surprise and a barbed wire fence)… she did jump slightly when a 10MM bullet went flying through my thigh though. Then again, so did I. I then proceeded to fall over (Bullets have that effect sometimes, you may have noticed).

Some commotion about my eye and a rather large dose of Med-X later, I was talking to the caravan leader. A nice chap called Joseph. And by nice, I dun mean friendly. He had those eyes, you know? They just understand, even when you haven't said a word yet. They read you like a computer monitor, and proceed to make you open every file and say your story. Not many people had that effect on me back then… amazing how things change with age.

Eleven years later, the girl and I were married. Joseph was the man who set up the whole thing. 48 years old, and that man was still strong as an ox, and as friendly as anyone could be. Naturally, we consummated the marriage, which was a little awkward for me, considering the various anatomy lessons I had never received, and the various parts of my anatomy which were spliced… those are details I may leave out. Some things just don’t need to be known, even by family.

Suffice to say, I had two delightful twins. A boy and a girl, Danye and Tawny, respectively. Three years of happiness and laughter (And I want to make it clear, they were 90% human… they did inherit the less obvious traits of mine), before I had to experience loss again. This time, I found myself saying those fateful words of “run” to my beloved and the children…

Jay saved my life many a moment. She seemed pleased to fire upon the raiders, like some kind of great, revengeful, nuke. A band of twelve, versus Joseph, me and my wife in the homestead. She had to look after the kids, having refused to leave, and Joseph was getting old. His eyes weren’t the best anymore, and his hunting rifle was shaky in his hands. It almost immediately became a stand off. It was the raiders with their shotguns and dynamite, against an old man, and a cursed one. Eventually, fate put it’s five caps worth in once again, by throwing us a stray piece of dynamite… it went straight towards Joseph, and he fired his gun towards a raider… hitting the explosive instead. It was just far enough to do no more than knock me over, but Joseph… he was a metre closer.

The explosion knocked the rifle out of his hands, landing at my wife’s feet. Joseph’s head slammed into the wall behind him, almost killing him with sheer blunt force. He just lay there, writhing in pain with half his skull split open and what I suspect may have been concussion… my wife had to. She had no choice. It was either her, or the raiders who would… she picked up the rifle, using her knee like a tri-pod and... shot him. Joseph, the man who became my father, lay dead barely two metres away. The raiders chose then to rush us.

I snapped. Anger, and fear, and the reactions of maybe a dozen different creatures inside my head… broke me. I wasn’t Mane anymore. I was Tenebras. I was every dark thought in my twisted mind, every animalistic urge to fight and destroy. I couldn’t distinguish between friend and foe, human and food, young and old… I came down on the 10 remaining raiders like a Fat man on a super mutant. Jay become an extension of my mind, combining brains with the bloodied earth whilst I clawed and kicked at each and every moving thing, ripping open skin, pulling out organs, biting down upon hearts and lungs alike, tearing through muscle and tendon with teeth of veritable iron…

Eventually, the blood pounding in my ears was overwhelmed by a terrifying howling and crying, very close by. I looked at what I was seeing, and was shocked to see that Jay was held in a young boys hand. He could barely have been three, and yet he was holding Jay just above the ground, trying to aim it at me, tears streaming down his face. It took me a moment to realise I was looking at Danye, and that the small package of cloth and noise behind him was Tawny. It took a moment still, to notice my wife’s eyes staring blankly at the sky, mouth wide with fear, and her throat ripped open with what I can only assume were my teeth.

To this day, I cannot remember biting on her flesh. But I would always remember four things.

Jeanette, in all her ghoulish glory, telling me to run.

Joseph, with his understanding eyes, as a bullet hits right between them.

My wife, with all that loving, an-*At this point, the ink is smudged. Looks as if the writer was crying on the page, and tried to wipe it off with little success*

And Danye. So scared, and so brave, and never the same…

*Attached with duct tape on the next page is a recording, Upon playing it, you hear this*

Mane: *Static, then a click, followed by a solid thud* There. Radio is off. Can we talk now?
Danye: Good to see you finally stopped running. I was starting to lose you… You’re letting me down, pops. Usually, the whole area is convinced you died by the time I arrive. Either that, or they hire me to kill you.
Mane: So I heard. Also heard, that you took a new name in DC. Ratter, huh? T’is a good name. Suits your purpose… where’s Tawny? She was with you in DC, where is she now?
Danye: Incident with a Shishkebab in Meresti.
Mane: *Whince* Ouch… she recovering?
Danye: I dunno. I left her there with the ghouls and a hunting rifle. If she has the same willingness to kill ghouls that she has towards you, she’s fine now. I left as soon as the fight was over. After all, you taught me to leave the weak behind and move on, eh dad?
Mane: *sullen* Danye… look. That wasn’t what I wanted to teach you. I’m sorry. You’ve heard of me. You know how much these genes torment me, and I am deeply sorry that I met you’re mother-
Danye: What, so you wouldn’t have me chase you all across the lands?! So you could just wash your hands of this whole thing, and continue ruining people!! I can’t let you kill again, dad! I’m already scarred! I faced Deathclaws, and Radscorpians, I even went to Point Lookout, and hunted you there… and not once, did I see that legendary eye! Not once, was I comforted! All I had was Tawny, in all her FUCKED UP glory, and now she’s god knows where!
Mane: Danye, look. Just, be quiet, and listen. I’m sorry. About all of it. But I’ve changed. I have a friend… she taught me to be… better. Through all my ups and downs, she was there. And I realised… that should be me. I should be there, for you. I should have taught you to heal, to farm, to hunt, to be tougher…
Danye: And I learnt all that on my own. *Click* I’m going to execute you now dad. I’m ending this war. This eternal torture. I know how much this has tormented you, and I am proud of you for living with it for so long. But you deserve a rest. As do I, and as does Tawny, if she lived… So long, dad. See you on the other side.
Mane: *Sad, yet proud of his sons last statement* You’re a better man then I. Live long and shoot straight, son.
*BANG*
Danye: *Stern* You don’t get to die so easily as that. A shot to the kidney should take you out shortly. I’m going to let you talk to whoever you need to, over your radio… *It sounds as if the recording device is being picked up* which apparently, you have used to record my voice. Clever man… *Clearly directed at the device* Whoever hears this, you should know this. Mane is an excellent person. He is not who I came to kill. Tenebras is. Know that, in case the clever git finds a way out… again.
