A (Condensed) History
Night Shimatori is a thing of mystery. An enigma of a new caliber, his story is an arduous one to tell.
Foregoing the story of how the Greek goddess and embodiment of the night came to be, there is a little-known story to be told of her affairs. Doing as the Greeks did, she sought sexual fulfillment from one of the other gods, a much younger god than she. She bed the Day, Apollo, and was to birth a child comprised of her and Apollo's forbidden love for one another. Before she could carry the child to term, though, another god displayed his covet for her heart and loins. Helios, the Sun, wanted Nyx to himself, but she would not give in, remaining true to her unborn child's father.
Helios' jealousy grew, and in his rage did he curse their love. In cursing this love did he curse the child. The god of day and the goddess of night were to be forever separated, but there could not be such a drastic shift between the light and darkness. A gradient was immediately necessary, for shifting from day to night would be to tear the world of man in half itself.
When Nyx bore her child, it was the curse that forced her hand and cohersed her to take human form, if only for a single evening. Thus, the child of two immortals was born among men, and would stay among them.
Though his body was mortal, his spirit was not. Upon death, this child named for his mother's dominion would be reborn as is the phoenix. With the death of each generation came Night's rebirth, again and again until finally a variable was added.
Night's soul was birthed to a human woman, as usual, but one whom carried the child of a demon with beastial characteristics. A wolf-hanyou named Kosuke was born, and burdened with a second identity.
Kosuke's childhood was not for the weak-hearted, and so he spent most of his time secluded within the mind he shared with this demi-god he could not name. By the age of thirteen, Night had learned of his own past but told Kosuke nothing.
Kosuke's mother, Naomi, and his father, Taikyu, with their own obligations, had not the time nor ability to manage a family as large as theirs with seven children, and separated their children from one another. Thus, Kosuke never met his twin brother, Kai.
When he was six years of age, Kosuke approached Night with the idea that he fade into their subconscious, and purge himself from life. Night would assume the body of the immortal Kosuke Shimatori, and become one of the Children of Lost Souls.
Night accepted, reluctantly. Kosuke Shimatori died that day, and all of ten years later did Night learn of his lineage. Approached by his brother, Kai Shimatori explained that he was Night's twin, though they had never met and neither knew the other's name. Kai had already gathered a number of the boys' siblings by this time: Akarui, the sister, and Dagger, one of the younger of the brothers.
It was here that Night began building his relationship with his family, under the rule of the Wolf Pack Clan, or WPC for short.
In the land of Eden, Night's homeland, the Wolf Pack Clan reigned supreme, under the leadership of a man named Jin at the time. Night was placed in a sub-clan with the rest of his family, a sect named the Night Wolves, or NW for short.
Despite the claims of other sub-clans stating that the NW was the weakest of the group, the Night Wolves carried out their missions without relent. Akarui would gather intelligence on rival clans, offering this information to Kai who would lead the charge against all opposition. Between Night, Kai, and the younger Dagger, no life was left among the bodies... if there were bodies left at all.
Prisoners of War were initiated into the WPC to help it grow, be they for forcible breeding purposes or some other use.
It was not long after Night's joining this group that his twin was promoted to the position of Beta, and that struck a sour chord. Jin had delegated all of his duties to Kai, who thought the clan could reach a higher potential were he able to make executive decisions without the leader's rarely-given permission.
This was the start of a new era. An epoch of its own kind, as the whole of the former NW turned on its governing parent and practically shoved Kai to the top. Right beneath him, Night was ready to assist. Finally, a war broke out.
When the dust settled, the deciding factor between the two warring parties was this: the NW was the assassination sect on which the WPC had relied to deal with all diplomatic problems in a not-so-diplomatic way. The best fighters the WPC had to offer were dumped into this faction, and they had formed a bond with one another. Against the 'brothers in arms', so to speak, the remaining WPC stood no chance. Thus, the Outlaw Wolves was forged.
Night had joined forces with his brethren in this newfound political superpower, but it was shortlived as he could feel the pressure of his own angst and disdain for his lack of ability. He felt that he was constantly being overshadowed by his twin, older than himself by few insignificant minutes. Finally, when the pressure became too much for him to take, Night left his family on a soul-searching journey.
On this journey, Night met and trained with many an opponent, skills ranging from the utterly incompetent to the god-like omnipotent. He learned much from his own meditations, as well, expanding the universe within his own mind to match and even surpass that of the one his body dwelled within. He studied physics and philosophy, metaphysics and the planes. He learned of the “many worlds” theory, and how to access these other cosmos from within his own universe -- even how to pass between them almost seamlessly. On occasion, he would make a crash landing so to speak, but he’d make it to and from with reasonable comfort and ease.
Then, Night met a man whose name he had never learned. The man taught him everything Night had already known, and many more things he didn’t know that he didn’t know. Among these was the idea that the omniverse had its own language, much like a programming language. This was something Night could understand, despite his never having touched, seen, or even heard of modern computing. This is due to Night’s innate adept for problem-solving and puzzles. The best way to explain this would be to describe Night as a logical creature. He can, and loves to, break down the way things work, then rebuild them for his own purpose.
In these studies, Night learned that his knowledge-gaining efforts would best be put to use in the manipulation of energy, and the manipulation of matter. These two substances are what comprise everything in the omniverse, and if he could master them... well, he could do anything.
‘Twas not long before Night was hit with a realization, though. It was impossible to fully master these two fields of study. There was always something new to be discovered, some random (though calculable) event that had specifically never occurred before and would yield a new result. Even some things that were unobservable in certain states, and would change if ever they were to become observed.
With this realization, though, came the unlocking of his latent power, produced by his aforementioned lineage of Apollo and Nyx. Being the respective deities of day and night, Night was left with a specific period which was not quite one way or the other -- most often referred to as the “twilight hour” -- an event which occurred twice every twenty four hours; once while the sun arose and once while the moon arose. It was something over which he held dominion, and with it came an awesome power.
A previously unobserved fraction of time, obvious that it was mundanely given to the masculine member of his parental units, which slipped between the two very distinct and very opposite allotments of “Sun” and “Moon”. These two celestial bodies were a main source of power for the entirety of life, no matter on what planet that life may exist. They were two separate sources of energy and at the same time gave off similar amounts of said power. Night was gifted with the ability to tap into both, allowing for incredibly strong displays of power as well as fueling his previously mentioned newfound ability: Dominion over time.
Yes, Night is a time traveler, but he has his limits. For instance, he can only manipulate time to a certain extent, but he can traverse time like one traverses a river, and only during one of the two twilight hours. The moon must also be in full view, reflecting as much of the sun’s light as possible -- which limits this to once every month. The moon must also reach the point in its ellipse around the Earth which is closest to the Earth.
Then he may travel through time, but... Night is incapable of changing anything involving the present. The past is static, unchanging, and the present is changeable only from within the present. Only the future can be altered. Night, however, did not wish to recreate history but only observe it. He did the first thing anyone who travels through time does -- he went back to the beginning.
Unfortunately, this was before Night fully understood the limitations of his power, and he soon realized that he had traveled to a point in time which was long, long before the formation of the two creations which gave him this ability in the first place.
So, Night waited. He used what he had learned in the past-- err, the future, to filter whatever atoms he could gather from the stars and breath oxygen... he used this same source to create water. Food was not necessary, but definitely a luxury. As soon as he’d learned to create it, Night made for himself essential foodstuffs with which to live.
As the eons passed, all Night could do was eat, drink, breathe, and meditate. So, he did. He meditated on his new power, using that aforementioned universe within his mind with which to run simulations, thinking about everything from “What would happen if I went back in time and murdered Naomi?” to “It sucks that I can’t just go back and murder Hitler.”
Eons had passed (five OOC years, actually) before he’d returned to his home. With quite literally all the time in the world, Night had used whatever means he could to learn everything he could possibly fathom -- for a guy with an entire Universe in his own head... that’s a lot of storage space.
