Overview. The Alpine Dragons are a species of furred, feral dragons that dwell across the vast expanse of terrain that make up the Alpine mountains and surrounding regions within Europe. In recent years their numbers have been on a slow decline, which had led them to become an uncommon species, with very little information documented on them.... In Depth
The species comes in two different sizes, standard and miniature. Whilst both sizes sport a similar look over all, the height difference between the two is staggering. Standards tend to reach a height of around twelve foot at the shoulder for males, and ten foot at the shoulder for females. Miniatures tend to reach around five foot at the shoulder for both genders, all of which that sport a wing expanse large enough for easy, unhindered flight. In both, the males tend to be bulkier, with a greater muscle density. Both make home within mountain caves, however the smaller dragons tend to remain higher up, at the harder to reach dwellings. Standards, that are much more able to defend their homes with sheer size alone, tend to stick to residing at lower levels. Alpine dragons are highly adapted to enduring harsh, cold climates. As reptiles, over the years they have had to evolve. The scales have deformed to create a long, course fur like strand to insulate heat close to their bodies. These also make the feathers of their wings, where the strand frays and splits for flight. In terms of coloring, they tend to stick to a uniform hue. Soft and dusty tan, with a lighter hued underbelly. Flecks of blue over the fur and at end of wings break up the bulk of their body in flight to make them harder to spot, and these patches and flecks of color tend to vary dragon to dragon. On rare occasion, grey dragons have known to be born. This is a rare mutation however, and it is not uncommon for some mothers to reject these offspring. Socially. Alpine dragons to not have much in the way of hierarchy. Whilst they might socialize with one another in small groups in neutral territory, they are fiercely territorial of what they consider to be theirs, and do not welcome others in their own space. These dragons either live alone, or on mated pairs. When a pair mates, it is typically for life, and all of their hoard they share with one another. A mated pair will reproduce roughly every century, and a young dragon will reside in the care of its parents for the first two hundred years of its life before moving on. This means that no more than four dragons will reside with one another at any one time. Abilities: Fire breathing. They are capable of breathing short bursts of close range, white flame. It is incredibly draining on their energy and is usually only used as a last defense. In Depth
Body heat. Years of living within colder climates of snow capped, mountain alps have long since caused these dragons to evolve to withstand. The flame that most dragons would possessed has adapted to instead heat their blood, which is why their fire breathing is so limited. Heat generally vibes from their bodies, and responds to their emotions, so they can involuntarily heat up with extreme moods. Humanoid shape. Most Alpine dragons possess the ability to change from their feral dragon states, to a more convenient humanoid one. All humanoid shapes will retain their horns, tails and wings. Changing shapes however, is not easy. Agonizingly painful, it requires bones to break and reshape constantly, and muscles to rip and realign. For this reason, a fair few of these dragons refuse to ever change. Flight. They are keen and skilled flyers. Able to perform skilled acrobat like moves, and fly with intense speed when in the sky. Most gain a sense of freedom and adrenaline from flying. Regenerative blood. Their blood when drank, can heal wounds. Small ones will be mended almost instantly, more serious ones will heal over a couple of days. It cannot cure sickness, and it cannot reform missing body parts. It will also be unable to affect themselves, or others of their kind. Magical properties aid in giving the blood a warm, mildly addictive taste. Individual abilities. A few develop their own passive abilities over time. Some are empathetic, and some are telepathic, though many possess the ability for neither of these. Reproduction and mating: It is more typical for Alpine dragons to mate with one of their own kind. They are a species that more often than not mate for life, and form unbreakable bonds to their partner that, if severed, can weaken the dragon, sometimes to the point of death. It is not impossible for an Alpine dragon to form a bond with another species, however giving their long lifespan, they typically tend to reject short lived species for simple fact of wanting to avoid heartache. A females reproduction tends to be determined by which state of herself she conceived in. If like in most situations, she was in her dragon form, an egg will be fertilized within her, carried for a couple of months, before being laid and, after six months, hatched. Eggs require constant incubation, one parent having to remain with the egg to keep around it, and breath a short burst of flame upon it every couple of hours or so. Its usual for their only to be one egg, though occasionally there can be two. If the female is in human form, she will carry the infant as a human woman would, for nine months, and have a normal birth. When a dragon is pregnant, they cannot change form. Male dragons can impregnate both humanoids and dragonkin, so long as they are in the right form to do so. Gender differences. Like in many species, of the two genders males tend to be a little more colorful that the females. Both have blue flecks that tint the end of the of their fur on random spots, but on the males it tends to be much heavier and more noticeable. Females are less so covered, with the majority of it being around their ears and down their chest. Both genders have colorful flight feathers. In Depth
Likewise in turn, males sport more physical defenses than their female counterparts. This is due to the fact that males are more physically aggressive. Their teeth and claws are longer, and they sport an extra, slightly thinner set of horns under their first pair. In both genders, the teeth curve back slightly to hook into the meat of their prey. Males also sport little spikes of bone at the ends of their tails, essentially turning it into a spiked club, making each end of them as dangerous as the other. Male alpine dragons are considerably bulkier. Heavy, with strong, muscular bodies and incredibly durable. Females, whilst still strong, possess more lean muscle. Faster, more agile and built for swifter flight and movement than their male counterparts. Diet. Both of the sizes, standard and miniature, eat the same sort of diet. The only difference is the quantity. Whereas a smaller dragon can survive on perhaps one elk a week for example, a larger dragon will need five or six to keep their appetite stated. In Depth
They are strict carnivores. Typically wild forest animals are their natural source of sustenance. Larger prey are typical choice, elk and deer, with smaller prey such as rabbits and rodents should there be nothing else around. Occasionally, particularly during winter months, they have been known to descend upon farming villages to steal cattle and sheep, but this is usually only when desperate. These dragons do not typically view humanoids as a source of food, and will rarely attack them, unless threatened or their home his invaded. Even then, they will rarely eat one they kill, leaving the carcass. Sometimes, in their humanoid forms, they can find the stomach to tolerate dairy products. Vegetation of any kind though will always be ignored, and they do not have much taste for anything overly sweet. Weaknesses. Unconsciousness. Whilst not affected when they sleep, if a dragon loses consciousness, they can no longer heat themselves. If they are in a cold environment, they will cool down and will eventually perish. An unconscious dragon will need to be kept warm externally (incubated) to survive. In Depth
Armor. They are seriously lacking in armor. Whilst their fur can provide some protection, their small scales underneath lack the tough form that most dragon scales usually have. Weak to magic. They are unable to throw off magical spells, so any magic thrown at them, they are most likely to be strongly affected by. |
