• The Set Up

  Zoli was born the only daughter of a highly affluent family. Her childhood was spent in luxury. Clothing so decadent it really had no place on a child was worn daily, toys that cost more than most families spent on rent in a year were played with once and cast aside. The little mouse had an army of nannies and assistants, who were expected to cater to every whim of the spoiled girl no matter how absurd. Discipline, restraint, and moderation were all alien to her. What she said and wanted was what happened. Her parents were rarely about. They were busy with their own lives and work, none of which meshed well with having a child about. Despite the lack of intimacy and bond, Zoli did love her parents.
  
  Maybe it wasn't fully her fault, but the over-privileged, indulgent lifestyle certainly shaped her personality. She was aloof and haughty - in her mind there was herself, her parents and than everyone else somewhere far below. Compliments were held behind locked teeth while insults and demeaning remarks flowed easily. Nothing had value to her. It didn't really matter how much something cost, or how valuable it might be. It could be replaced, and with something better no doubt.
  
  The only redeeming point the highly spoiled rodent seemed to show her inexplicable devotion to education. It wasn't necessary - It didn't really matter if she was smart or stupid, ugly or pretty. She'd be very well taken care of no matter what she did. But learning was the only thing she'd even thrown herself into with full gusto. Money meant she went to the best schools, had the best tutors, could afford extravagant trips to study niche interests in foreign lands. As she aged, a very strange interest in birds became more and more prevalent. Towards the end of her life in the lap of luxury, ornithology had taken the place of many more indulgent habits. And while the sudden preference for sitting in a field with books and binoculars instead of spending money and flaunting her high social stature was a good sign, that of a mature adult emerging form the rude shell of a spoiled child, her metamorphosis was stopped dead in its tracks by events she couldn't control.[/size]

• The Collapse

  Her families business dealings were something she had never been interested in. Truth be told, she wasn't even sure exactly what it was her parents did, that took them away from the home for so many months on end. It was never something she had questioned though. Mother and Father never felt compelled to tell her about what they did, and she never cared enough to ask. In hindsight, she should have.
  
  The first signs that something might be wrong were subtle. Horses in the stables began to vanish, till they were all gone one day. Staff who had worked in the home for as long as she could remember stopped showing up. But things began to get more noticeable over time. Her allowance was whittled down every week. The house began to run with such a skeleton crew that Zoli was forced to do certain things for the first time in her life (It was during this period that she discovered what a truly awful cook she was.) But the final blow as far as she cared, was whens he was called into her headmasters office to be told her tuition hadn't been paid for the year. There had been promises of payments to come by her father, but the school was no longer willing to accept that. She was escorted off the campus.
  
  Numb, Zoli had made her way home only to be greeted by her father. If he had chosen this day to come home purely out of chance or on purpose, she'd never know. The little mouse felt neglected, abandoned. Money, the thing that had been a substitute for love, was no longer coming in. She would scream and stomp her feet, tossing a fit worthy of a spoiled child. When she began to settle was when her father began to speak. It was with a clinical coldness that he informed her there was no more money, and for her there never would be. The slave trade could be a gamble if not done correctly... and her parents hadn't done it correctly for a number of years now. The obscene wealth that had been built on the backs of traded flesh was lost to the same thing.
  
  Zoli was still reeling from this when the other boot dropped. They were in debt to a number of slave houses, but one of them have provided an option to void the money they owned. It was with an almost smug expression that her father informed Zoli for the first time in her life, she'd be contributing to the economic wellness of the household.
  
  There was a sharp pain on the backside of her head, and everything went black. When she woke up, she was in the Golden Tether.

• Slavery

  Tall metal bars surrounded the grid of stones she spent years pacing, sitting, and sleeping on. It was in this pen she met many dear friends, other slaves who would leave with owners eventually. But Nix stayed there for month after month. To say the house regretted the trade was probably an understatement. Nix turned out to be a particularly horrible slave.
  
  Everything that could be wrong, she did. Venomous words were snapped and snarled, insults given freely to any person outside of the cage who attempted to engage her in conversation. As she saw it, anyone out there was part of the problem. They were the reason she was in this position. She was defiant, disobeying orders and commands with absolutely no though given to how she may be reprimanded. While she had the sense to obey the house staff (for the most part) everyone else was free game to her. About the only thing she had never done was behaved aggressively. She was certainly willing to threaten a hard kick or a bite, but she had never actually done it. That minor level of restraint was probably the only reason she was still around at all.
  
  The girl was often subjected to a level of cruelty and abuse no one should have to deal with. But her mouth attracted it... the things she said made people want to punish her. For about the first year, that's all it was. Being beaten and raped. But things began to change at some point. Sex and pain began to intermingle in her brain. The first time she realized she was enjoying a particularly painful caning was probably the single most humiliating moment in her life. This realization only added a level of self loathing to the anger that seemed to make up the bulk of the canines personality.
