    Detailed Job Description
    • Captain: The head of the ship. The Captain has utmost authority over all other positions. He decides where the ship goes, how it gets there, and when it gets there. He is in charge of keeping the crew safe, and profitable.
    • Quartermaster(First Mate): Second in command. The only person the First Mate has to take orders from is the captain. The Quartermaster has ultimate authority, and often acts as a second captain. They make sure the crew is cared after, and doing their job. They can dish out punishment if need be.
    • Sailing Master: This officer is in charge of Navigation, and the sailing of the ship. They direct the course and look after the maps, and instruments necessary for navigation. On the Valdys they are usually at the helm, if the ship is not piloted by the Captain or First Mate.
    • Boatswain: The Boatswain supervises the maintenance of the vessel and its supply stores. They are responsible for inspecting the ship, and its sails and rigging each morning, and reporting their state to the captain. The Boatswain is also in charge of all deck activities, including weighing and dropping anchor, and handling the sails.
    • Carpenter: The Carpenter is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the wooden hull, masts, and yards. They work under the direction of the ship's Captain and Boatswain. Their duties are to check the hull regularly, placing oakum between the seems of the planks, and wooden plugs on leaks to keep the vessel tight.
    • Surgeon: The ships personal doctor, in charge of keeping the crew healthy, and patching them up after a battle, or working accident. They usually have to train other crew members to help in medical procedures, or handle the massive work load, that comes after a battle.
    • Master Gunner: The Master Gunner is responsible for the ship's guns and ammunition. This includes sifting the powder to keep it dry, prevent it from separating, insuring the cannons and ordnance were kept free of rust, and that all weapons were kept in good repair. They are also in charge on the gun decks during battle, making sure the cannon teams are on point, and on mark. A knowledgeable Gunner is essential to the crew's safety and effective use of their weapons
    • Able Bodied Sailor: The Common sailor, which is the backbone of the ship, they need to know the rigging and the sails. As well as how to steer the ship, and applying it to the purposes of navigation. They need to know the importance of reading the skies, weather, winds, and most importantly the moods of their commanders.
    • Rigger: The sailors assigned aloft to work the running, rigging, and to furl/release the sails are referred to as Riggers. Although there are not truly safe jobs, due to the constant risk of falling from a slippery spar high above a rolling deck, this is the most dangerous of jobs.
    • Cabin Boy/Girl: A young adult who works aboard a pirate ship as a servant. Most find their way aboard ship by being kidnapped by pirates, were runaways looking for escape, or a personal slave of the captain. Their job was to do whatever they were told to do, though usually kept out of conflict.
