Discretion

  • Funny thing, mercenaries. They don’t usually get old. But once in awhile, fate conspires with the blacksmiths and the fletchers and the swords don’t cut deep enough and the arrows don’t come close enough. Vice might pick up where the steel leaves off, but sometimes the same sellsword who’s blessed with battlefield longevity also loses his taste for strong drink and paid companionship. A taste for smoke might fill the gap, but let us be honest - if there is death to be had there, it’s of a much more leisurely sort than sword, arrow, drink, or disease.

    In reflecting on it, there’s something strangely unbecoming of moderation in a mercenary.

    However, moderation has its advantages. When one’s vices want, one’s coin purse does not. And while coin might not purchase happiness or fulfillment, it does allow one a great deal of discretion in terms of the employment one does and does not accept. The discretion, and the wisdom to wield it, further extends one’s life.

    The question, one I’ve struggled with until very recently, was to what end?

  • Advantages/Disadvantages


    Advantages

    Educated: His speech suggests, at some point or another, he received a thorough classical education.

    Sapper: Knows enough chemistry to blow something up. Knows enough engineering to put it back together. Usually.

    Awareness of Magic: He is well versed in what magic, both elemental and non-elemental, can and cannot do - this is important enough to be labeled as an advantage.

    Resistant to Psionics: He is not immune to mental assault, but anyone attempting such might discover that his head is a dangerous place to be.

    Battle Hardened: He is as comfortable as it is possible to be in the thick of combat. He is physically strong, able to endure one hell of a beating, and more than passingly competent with a respectable assortment of weapons.


    Disadvantages

    Addiction (Nip): Smoking is, literally, the only thing that allows him to function in civilized society.

    Deadened Senses: As a consequence of the above addiction, combined with age, all of his cardinal senses have suffered. His nose is shot. His hearing is dubious. His vision is anything but hawklike. He is completely unable to appreciate fine food and drink. And as for touch, it probably wouldn’t be hard to hang a “Kick Me” sign on his back. Ill advised, yes, but not hard.

    Slowed Cognition: His speech tends to give away that he is/was reasonably intelligent, but often (again as consequence of his addiction) he’s not the quickest to respond. Admittedly, this isn’t always a disadvantage, but it does mean he’s rarely seen as witty.

    Lacking Agility: He is not stealthy. He is not agile. Think of it this way - confronted with a locked door, he will not try to pick the lock, climb in through the window, or even go looking for another door. Instead, he will knock that mother down. His fighting style is similar.
