    Inspired by the one started for Cosmos, this is mostly just for my own sanity so I don't have to go back through my own logs to look up whatever I called something the last time I mentioned it.

    Also: WIP. This is a mess. Come back in like 20 years. Not alphabetized. Poorly organized. Links where relevant.

  • Cybernetics

    Cybernetics – Umbrella term for mechanical/electronic augmentations, usually created for organic carbon-based beings, although the term can also be applied to outside-tech or augmentations added to synthetic beings as well (such as an android or biosynth having a cybernetic arm of a different source). Usually more visibly mechanical than bionic creations, although many exceptions exist, especially from the leading cyberneticists in the field. Can be external or internal, including internal implants such as neurotransmitters (nanites occasionally fall under cybernetics depending on who you talk to), bone-alloy enhancements, or external like weapons, chassis, grappling-hook legs... From a veteran receiving a cybernetic limb, to a cyberzombie that exists as nothing more than a brain in a jar that fits inside of a weaponized chassis. The field is so wide as to be difficult to quantify.

    Datajack – Colloquial term for a neurotransmitter.

    Neurotransmitter – Short for Cybernetic Neurotransmission Interface. Sometimes CNI, or a Neural Interface/r or Neural Implant. Colloquially, Datajack. Provides a direct neural interface between one’s brain and technology, allowing for several uses: Accessing VR or AR, controlling cybernetics, external rigs, or wireless household appliances (never turn on your toasteroven with your hand again!).

    Exoskeleton – Term for external (cybernetic) enhancements that support/protect one’s skeletal frame, either by being powered to increase one’s strength (beyond what one’s natural skeleton—or muscles, for that matter—could normally support), or providing extra armour. Or both. Usually uses hydraulic jacks in their design.

    Cybernetic Socket – The surgically-inserted metal device that translates a person’s muscle signals into something a cybernetic limb can understand; into this socket slots the limb itself. Although not all cybernetics (especially lacking in older models) have a separate socket, it certainly aids in maintenance, being able to remove and upgrade the limb at will.

    Bone Lacing – A type of invasive internal cybernetic that involves adding a wire meshing of a strong alloy to one’s bones, increasing their strength against breaking. There is no legal, accepted surgery for this in the GalFed, as it's incredibly invasive and dangerous to attempt (as muscles are attached to bone). It's not something one can get done in a public hospital, and even the Peacekeepers have not perfected it quite yet.

    Subdermal Armour – Including Dermal Plating, or Subdermal Kinetic Dampening packs. Internal cybernetic; essentially adding hard shock-resistant plates or pliable dilatant materials just under the skin. Useful for deflecting blunt damage. Not something one can get done in a public hospital--military, occasionally, or blackmarket as it is quite invasive and dangerous.

    Skillwires – Neuromuscular controllers; intertwine muscles allowing one to override them. Can be used to hardwire reflexes, or enhance one’s reaction-time. Originally designed to assist individuals with neurological conditions and atrophy preventing normal muscle movement, allowing restoration of function. Mercenaries and the black market gets... Creative.

    Cyberlimb – Catchall term for an external cybernetic replacement—of an arm, a leg, usually.

    Hydraulic Jack – A mechanical improvement to lifting strength; usually used in some capacity in most mechanical limbs. But can be used to surpass one’s natural strength when installed in cybernetic legs or an exoskeleton system.

    Synthskin – A synthetic skin-like substance. Usually what coats most organic-passing androids, although forms can also be used to replace organic skin in conditions where true skin-grafts or otherwise regrown skin cannot be used. Very low rejection rate.

  • Bionics

    Bionics – Overarching engineering term used to describe the creation, development, and maintenance of entirely synthetic beings--androids. This includes entirely mechanical, biosynthetic, and biodroids. Not to be mistaken for bioengineering or biomechanical engineering, a precursor to cybernetics.

    Synthskin – In the case of bionics, used to describe the skin-like substance used to cover most organic-passing androids. Made from a variety of materials over the centuries--rubber, latex, silicon... All long out of date now.

    Biosynthetic – Describes an android made to mimic organics down to the almost-cellular level. Usually powered by nanotechnology, they bleed, have fleshy organs, and require food and sleep, just like organics. But all of there cells are in fact nanites.

    Bio-Droid – Describes a partially or fully 'organic' android. That is, they were 'made' rather than born, but made of organic materials rather than synthetics. Examples are beings cobbled together from vat-grown organs and synthetics, to flora-based (genetically grown plants in a lab pieced together into a thinking being).

    Shell – Used to describe the chassis, body, or 'husk' of an android, separate from its 'consciousness' or central cortex.

    Chassis – Another term for an android shell or body, although usually used in the case of androids (and some cyberzombies) that specifically transfer themselves between a number of chassis/shells.

    Andy – A short-hand term for android, often used derogatively.

    Droid – Another short-hand for android, often also used derogatively, although also commonly used to describe any sub-AI/non-fully-organic-passing android, especially non-conscious service-droids that are still vaguely human-like in appearance with base-level autonomy (separate from drones).

    Drone – Used separate from androids/droids, in that these are usually non-human in appearance, and have no autonomy/decision-making skills. Just basic machines programmed to a set path, to fill a set purpose.

    Domo Droid – Describing any android constructed by Dr Domo.

    Substrate-Independent Minds – SIMs for short; the term used for the digital-download of an organic's consciousness into a digital form, that can be transferred to an android or otherwise. Most strongly associated with Dr Domo Androids. Also referred to as a WBE, or Whole Brain Emulation.

    reNcarn8 – The now-standard memory retention software, used in any human-to-android transition. x

  • Medical Instruments

    Diagnostic Tools
    ** Handheld to lab-scale, scanners, computers, tech, anything used for running diagnostics.

    Biometric Readers – Handheld carried by most medical personnel. Reads basic biochemical or mechanical makeup, providing valuable information. Think a medical tricorder.

    Atmospheric Readers – Handheld that reads atmospheric conditions, such as oxygen content, toxin hazards, and overall breathability.

    Biomonitor – Measures life-signs, and can analyze simple samples.

    Ophthalmoscope – Or funduscope. Dual-Use Ophthalmoscopes allow doctors to peer inside the fundus of the eye, in organic organs, or within the inner-circuitry of cybernetic eyes with a similar penlight-magnification.

    Other Instruments
    ** Specifically for treatment/dispensing of medication.

    Medpatch – An adhesive dermal patch that dispenses fast-acting drugs through the skin, and also stems bleeding. The patch itself comes in a variety of types: standard medpatch, administers a painkiller, self-healing short-term nanites, and stems minor bleeding, stimpatch, which administers a stimulant like caffeine; trauma patch, immediately stops moderate to severe bleeding.

    Hypo/Hypospray – Shorthand term for a hypospray, a type of hypodermic needle that uses air to inject a liquid under the skin, either for intravascular or intramuscular use.

    Autosuture – A discreet pen-like device which resembles a threader. It efficiently sutures up synthetic or organic skin, and is less likely to scar than suturing by hand.

    Osteogenic Stimulator – Used to fix broken bones, but requires that the bone be properly realigned first (unless you want a crooked graph). Works by a combination of a calcium-based bondent and the speeding up natural bone-healing. The result is a sealed fracture, however the affected bone will remain a bit brittle/prone to rebreakage for a weak afterwards.

  • Diagnoses

    Planetside Sickness – A form of agoraphobia specific to being planetside under open sky; common amongst satellite-born citizens, tends to dissipate with repeated exposure to planets. Characterized by an intense fear of open sky, but can sometimes be partially alleviated by being indoors. Symptoms include all of those associated with agoraphobia, as well as sudden fatigue/fainting, dizzyness, nausea, and vomiting. Can be managed by a mild oral sedative that I haven't named yet.

    New Arrival Syndrome – Experienced most prominently by new Dr Domo androids, but any New Arrival is prone to it. A justifiably panicked state of mind upon learning that your old life is over and you can never go back! Can be treated with lots of therapy.

    Mortimer's Disease – A slow-progressing disease resulting from exposure to a complex mixture of pollutants. Fever, coughing; attacks the lungs and other organs. Abdominal and chest pain, vomiting, coughing, rash. Eventually spreads to the brain, with hallucinations and death.

  • Medication

    Somnumlian – Dream-suppressant prescription drug. Prescribed for severe PTSD or dangerous night-terror cases, it has a 98% success rate.

    Perthvimo – A powerful drug used to treat the combined motion-sickness and anxiety symptoms associated with extreme agoraphobia Planetside Sickness.

  • Nanotechnology

    Embolic Nanotech/Nano-Embolization – No catheters needed. A new-age technique for embolization, wherein smart-bots are injected into the bloodstream, programmed ahead of time to head to the intended target, where they intentionally clot and block off the affected artery, stopping internal bleeding.

    Synthetic Haemo-Nanite Transfusion – An injection of nanites designed to replace the function of a red blood cell and transport oxygen (or other necessary gas) in the bloodstream. They're only used in extreme medical emergencies where the patient is bleeding out and no suitable transfusion or synthetic transfusion alternative is available. The nanites offer only a temporary prolonging of life (and do not replace the job of other components of the blood--such as the white blood cell), enough to get a patient to the right facility.

  • Miscellaneous Lingo

    Miscellaneous Terminology

    Biometrics – What make you ‘you’; your DNA, your fingerprints, your heart-rate, iris or retina ocular scans... Many things are coded to your unique biometrics, such as cybernetics, to prevent theft. Occasionally weapons. Both will only function for one person.

    RFID – Radio-frequency identification. Short-distance electromagnetic identifiers, usually attached to legal weapons, cybernetics, or other objects liable to be stolen; contains important information like tracking and lot numbers for returning said items to their rightful owners. Hence it’s important to strip or reset RFIDs on all... ‘obtained’ merchandise.

    Miscellaneous Augmentations

    Nanite – Nano-scale autonomous bots, usually functioning within organic or non-organic beings for the purposes of self-repair or diagnostics.

    Nanotech – Nanotechnology; umbrella term for everything nanite, or nano-sized, usually meaning anything on the nano-scale that is autonomous in function.

    Synthskin – A synthetic skin-like substance. Usually what coats most organic-passing androids, although forms can also be used to replace organic skin in conditions where true skin-grafts or otherwise regrown skin cannot be used. Very low rejection rate.
