An Affable Scrivener

  • The Affable Scrivener writes a great many letters, and a great many of
    them to the same places — the same pale faces in shadowy doorways, their
    slim, sallow fingers snapping the envelopes from the hands of
    couriers like the beaks of peckish birds. But tonight, the address
    written on that devilbone-white parchment seems to lead nowhere at all.

      A letter arrives to the desk of the Affable Scrivener;

      Marked only with a distinctive violet lip-print and its arrival beyond the fact that it is there, centered right on the wooden altar of his desk, is a thing no one seems to have witnessed. Its contents are lightly scented, vanilla, flowers, cherry tobacco and the contents handwritten:
      "Darling,
      Come to the Mandrake this evening immediately after your shift,
      or else I will do unspeakably filthy things with your cravat and not give it back.      "

      Beneath is a crude drawing of the author dancing in a lewd fashion with the Scrivener's cravat, one might assume.

      "There are whispers from the very height of society down to the lowest flea-bitten vagrant: The Old Crow knows.

      The tales are numerous.

      A prominent socialite received a full copy of her adulterous husband's little black book so she could start exacting her revenge.

      A politician bought some dirt on his opponent that was so filthy it kicked him irrecoverably to the bottom of the poles.

      The constables got the time, date, and location of a shipment of illicit goods much to the dismay of some criminals.

      And some criminals got the names and home addresses of some very dismayed constables.

      Some say The Old Crow even knows the secrets of devils and the inner-workings of the very soul.

      But how do you contact a person--a creature?--that no one has seen? Rumour has it that a ginger-haired courier down on Ladybones Road knows."
