  • There is a Stranger Here

    The marbled halls smell darkly of sweating stone and the rank crush of mingling bodies. Sluggish winds make their way down into that hidden place, ripe with the tang of seaside rot and the fine perfumes peddled from the docks. Below the airy laughter of the merchants and courtesans, however; below the gaiety, the air is stagnant and wet, choked with the stink of lichen and still subterranean waters. In this place, there are nightmares and ghosts.

  • Under the hellish orange light of the boilers, a thing in the shape of a man sits crouched. It perches on the balls of its feet, hunched like a gargoyle with its back to the world. The stones beneath it glitter with a dark, foul wet, and the stench of it clots in the mouth like pale gobbets of fat.

    The stranger dips his head, the sounds of his working throat and jaw moist and wretched in the muggy quiet. His palms slip in the pungent slickness beneath him and he topples bonelessly, his brow striking the ground with an alarming, wet crack. The mucid, rattling wheeze of his breath sounds only slightly like a laugh.
