A Brief Backstory
Orphaned as a small child, Eliana was sent to a home for girls. When she showed remarkable artistic talent and a keen mind, the proprietor of the girls' home sent Eliana to a training school for courtesans, as it was the only place to send a girl without means or connections that still provided a quality education. There, she was educated and trained to be able to blend in with high society, carry on conversations with lords and ladies, and entertain them as well. Eliana loved the initial freedom that came with the title of 'courtesan,' but struggled with the concept of advertising her body to earn money. She was often too timid to put herself out there like the other girls from her training school, and disliked the idea of giving herself to men she hardly knew or found unpleasant solely for the sake of finances. Soon after 'graduating' from the school and being told to start earning her keep, a close friend made the choice to take on a very abusive patron because he kept her living well and offered financial security. Watching her friend hide bruises and other injuries for the sake of high living made Eliana's stomach turn, and so she fled.
Penniless and homeless, she wandered from city to city in hopes of finding some alternate way of life. However, minor artistic skills only got one so far without patronage, and street artists are all too common. Eliana was beginning to consider falling back on the other skills the school had taught her, despite how degrading it would be now that she had given up the 'courtesan' status and would be reduced to true prostitution. All that she truly desired was to find a home, but that dream seemed impossible without the proper breeding or family fortune to fall back on.
Eventually, she found herself at The Golden Tether, and was introduced to a new kind of lifestyle - that of slaves and masters. The thought of placing herself so completely under someone else's care still frightened her, but it seemed the slaves at the establishment were well taken care of if they behaved, and Eliana was far from the argumentative type. Still, she roamed the building as a free woman, enjoying the roof over her head, until Azazel claimed her without warning. While out on her own, misbehavior simply led to being ignored or scorned. Now that she had a master, misbehavior led to punishment and humiliation. The already timid girl quickly learned that holding her tongue and obeying immediately led to comfort and relative freedom. Though she ended up in the exact position she had tried to avoid - placing herself under someone else's for the sake of a sheltered life - Eliana was fortunate that her master was as far from her friend's patron as possible.
