    You're falling for him.
    
    That's the backbone of these past few months. An admittedly terrifying verdict, same old risk of being broken all over again and having to start anew, but different this time because your fear brings on a censorship you've never exercised upon yourself before... Your heartstrings might sing as loud as before, but this time you don't listen. You take it slow. Because he might just be worth being allowed the comfort of taking things at his own pace, even if at the expence of your hopeless pining.
    
    He doesn't know how you feel. You can bet he thinks he does, but all your adoring smiles and gentle caresses are just a dim light compared to the sunshine you want to press into his skin.

Then it's just primal. In the middle of the woods, with you almost begging for it. You'd feel ashamed if you had the time to regret anything.

    Every night you wonder if he'll return to you. Even with alcohol on his tongue and sex on his mind, you're always glad he does.     You stand in front of her. Valerie. And you don't know what to do. You do know, you just forget, the moment you see her. It's been weeks after the incident, weeks after the rumour was disputed. She's okay. You're not. You know you're better off not mentioning it, lest she laugh in your face. You're living through what she once lived through too. What she just had to experience. You know it's life-ruining, being with him, giving him everything and knowing, deep down, in your fucking soul, that he's too shattered to care, that there's too little of his heart to give and he covets it like a keepsake. You know what it's like to love him. So does she. You wonder if that's why she hated you so long. Maybe Harvey looked happy? With you? Maybe he actually is. You're not. He doesn't care like you do. You want to tell her as much. Comfort her. 'He could never love me either.' That would be cruel. 'He was too broken for us to fix.' And this - obvious. So all you say is:

    III. Things you said too quietly
    The weeks to come are the hardest because he doesn't notice you pulling away and if he does, he doesn't say anything about it. Or the packed bag you've set up in one corner of the bedroom. It's been a long time coming and you feel like he knows it... He's better equipped at handling it than you are, this departure. He doesn't try to fight it, why should he even bother? He knows, better than you ever will, how hopeless it all is and while you know he made an effort to be happy, he can never quite achieve it. And for the second time in your life, you make a decision to leave the man you love so you don't have to see him break every single day. This time around, though... The last moments you spend together don't hurt as bad. They're softened by a long-time-coming revelation that you could never be the one for him and with you out of his life, he can find that someone that can stitch his heart up better and make him whole again. You want that for him... You love him to death. You want to see him happy.
    He holds you close that night and you revel in it, pressed against his steadily rising and falling chest. And when you say it for the last time, you know he's not awake to hear: "I love you."
