Skaoi Flidais

Skaoi grew up in a quiet village on the border, although calling it a border would have never occurred to her back then. It was a suggested line, indicated by a few single stones which was crossed by people from either side on the daily. Rising tensions between the nations did not bother these parts where even newspapers usually arrived with a week of delay on the best times. Even the notion of 'belonging' to this greater nation was something she could hardly grasp as a concept. She was ... just herself, living a simple life with her family in a village barely counting a hundred people.

This was the same for Fabien, a boy from the neighbouring village, right across this imaginary line. She saw him daily, working their family's fields, barely a small creek separating the two until such a small obstacle was not enough to hold back their curiosity anymore. Secret glances turned into open stares. Secret outings became common as they stole away from work for a while every day, meeting up in the forest, exploring and having fun. It was an innocent love which slowly matured as they did, eventually leading into the engagement everyone had already long been expecting. Secrets did not stay such for long when everyone knew everyone. As such, their secret meetings had long been known to everyone and their parents had already gotten into contact long before either side finally admitted to this relationship.

The young couple spent a few blissful weeks preparing for their wedding in the following year but before the new year rolled around, war broke out. Fabien was drafted, leaving his love with little but a small locket to remember him by. Months after as the war turned ugly, Skaoi was drafted as well. She had thought about dodging this duty and continue waiting but eventually made up her mind to go look for her love instead. He had to be out there...
