    Born in Japan in the 1950s, Hanako never met her father, due to him being away at war while her mother stayed at home to take care of the child. She went to school and had average grades for her age and was treated normally at her school.

    At some point, she ended up dying in a rather gruesome way - her throat being slit open. Due to her dealing with great anger about how horrible her death was, she couldn't move onto the after-life and resided in the girls' third floor bathroom.

    She haunted people who followed the instructions of the legend, which were to say "are you there, Hanako-san," three times. It is said that she will reply, "I'm here," and if the caller opens the door, Hanako will be there.
