Hernández tried to get as many horses out as possible with a bolt cutter whilst the fire raged around him, though his efforts were hindered by each stall having a different padlocks to prevent theft. Despite saving a number of horses from the fire, several were burned alive in the flames. Hernández claims that the worst noise he'd ever heard was the horses screaming as they were burned alive.
