Kelpie
Kelpie, or water kelpie, from Celtic Mythology, is the name given to a shape-shifting water spirit inhabiting the lochs and pools of Scotland. It has usually been described as appearing as a horse, but is able to adopt human form. Some accounts state that the kelpie retains its hooves when appearing as a human.
~My take on Kelpies is based on the myths surrounding the creature and my own imagination~
Kelpies are water creatures that dwell in murky ponds, flowing rivers or marshland and eat the souls of children. They disguise themselves as lost ponies to lure unsuspecting children into riding them, some say the Kelpie's have a hold on their victims and children are lost as soon as they set on eyes upon the Kelpie because the Kelpie already has them under it's spell. Once the child is on the Kelpie's back, it's skin turns adhesive and the Kelpie dives into the water and drowns the child. The Kelpie then devours the child's soul.
Kelpies need children's souls to reenergise and stay alive, if Kelpies don't they will die.
Kelpies tend to be female for unknown reasons, similar to nymphs and sirens, and it's unknown whether there are any Kelpie stallions. Kelpies tend to dwell in connected rivers and despite beliefs prefer to live in a group or a pod rather than take on a solitary existence, only to separate from the group to hunt solitary. Living in a pod means that it's easy to defend territory and a single Kelpie can hunt and attract prey to a river so they can all eat.
Kelpies are ruled over by the strongest Kelpie who is referred to as 'queen'. This Kelpie, called Aedre, is believed to be a thousand years old and is greatly feared.
