Victorian dressmakers favoured a narrow, funnel-shaped style of corset which, given long-term wear and training, would re-shape the ribcage and relocate internal organs accordingly; comme ça. This style of corset is referred to now as a conical corset (Note: s-bend corsets were also worn, at this time). Far more common, contemporarily, are hour-glass corsets and waist-cinchers, which -- though they do still re-shape the ribs and waist -- do not restrict air-flow to nearly the same extent, nor do they warp the spine in quite the same manner as an S-bend. An inability to properly breathe often lead to what was called 'the vapours', or fainting spells. Though the degree of corset training to which the Madame has been subjected was willfully moderate, compared to other ladies of her day, her ribs and waist are still deformed; thus, she keeps a tight leash on her emotions, in order to dodge the spectre of hypo-ventilation. You'll have to try pretty damn hard to make 'er faint, kids. Since her arrival at Guildereim, Didiane may be seen sporting varieties and styles of corset other than the conical and s-bend, though she still favours the former, given the better fit. |
