      "My Dearest Didiane,

      It is unfair of me to leave without seeing you face to face and for that I can only apologize and hope you will forgive me. I can only apologize a second time for taking so much time to write you. You must trust that I am well and that I am sound of mind. I realize my departing was abrupt and without notice. Can you blame me? We need not discuss the state I was in when we last spoke, but I am sure that you understand. I feel it would be a grave mistake to have stayed. I truly hope that you will understand my reasoning for leaving, even if I don't go into great depth. You have been an incredible friend, someone that seems to understand me with only a single look of knowing.

      Attached to this letter are the dates (rough at best) and coastal towns I intend to dock at during my trip. Please feel free to send letters at your leisure; perhaps we could schedule a time in which we could meet as I do not know when I will return, if ever.

      Please know I hold you close to my heart and that you are one of my closest friends. Never forget that, Didiane.
