  Vigil's Keep

  Andraste was raised on a small farm of no name, no consequence. She was bred with the words of the Chantry forged into her every move, despite her stony resilience at times. Tragedy came, as tragedy does, and through no fault of her own her family's farm was reduced to an ashen waste. It was assumed the entirety of her family as well. Her father told miraculous stories of warrior, men & women of the Chantry marching honorably beside their brethren in defense of more than cities & countries, but of the world. Andraste felt honor bound by the memory of her father to seek & join these brave souls, to prove herself at any cost. She would not stop until she became a Grey Warden.

  Andraste grew under the care of her father, her mother & her fathers brother, raised like a son with ax & sword in hand. An only child until her mother was struck pregnant again when she was 15, the young woman was being raised to take head of their family name, Cathal. Greatly revered as an upcoming & promising warrior, she learned battle cries before pleasantries & to run armed rather than crawl. However, never is a warriors past so easy, nor so clean.
  
  Now, when it comes to affairs of family, she has none remaining. Her mother and younger brother died in childbirth, leaving only Andraste & her father, her uncle an unstable character poisoned by drink now. He remarried soon after but the woman was bare of any living children. The woman(***), whose name Andraste refuses to say, was a cold, jealous creature who was often angered by her fathers love for her & certainty that Andraste would be more than adequate as an heir, since none had been further provided. Old fashioned & headstrong, after the death of her father, her step mother married 17 year old Andraste to a pig of a man by the name of Mallus Nathrom. The marriage was one the girl had no control over & despite the sloppy attempted intervention by her fathers brother, law was law, it mattered not the she was less than a month from free. (***)
  
  Nathrom was 15 years her senior, abusive & a drunk, but rich & greedy, always ready for battle & profit. She lived under him until the age of 24, cursed with one miscarriage of her own & damned as an infertile & wasted investment. As Nathrom continued to whore around with others, there began whispers of remarriage, which would require the death of Andraste. She took the news with grace & silence, yet none questioned outloud the death of Nathrom some months later, just days shy of her day of birth, while travelling through Imadris. A quiet & strong tale of bandits, stolen goods & a near fatal wound that travelled a large portion of her body is all that left the mouth of the newly widowed warrior. While she remained in the Nathrom Estate (her father's being parted out by her step mother for profit), she cast the name aside & challenges aggressively any who referred to her by it, despite the legality.
