Intro

• Come Away Dear Molly

  She was soaked to the bone and shivering uncontrollably from the miserably cold rains that battered her under her flimsy canvas hood, and from the winds that whipped her robe about behind her. Shielding her eyes with one hand and clutching a package with the other, she strained through the dark to try and make out what was happening with the ship that had just dropped her off at the docks of Guildereim. There was apparently some kind of customs issue, and her associate was being detained on deck while she had to wait on the docks, exposed to the wild elements of this tropical island.
  
  Finally, flanked by the Clydesdale guards that would become a reassuringly familiar sight for her, her associate carefully climbed down the gangplank onto the wet docks and approached her. He, like her, was wearing robes that were mainly for protection against the weather, but partly to obscure his features against prying eyes. Officially speaking, Molly did not know him and had never met him before in her life and vice versa. Only these two equine guards and the captain of the ship had any knowledge of their collusion, and these guards had probably been bribed heavily.
  
  "Give the package to this fellow," said the man under the cloak, indicating the taller of the two Clydesdales. "And take this purse: this is your stipend. Use it to purchase clothing for yourself, a room, fine food and drink and all that. For now, all you are to do is socialize with the people here. Establish yourself as a patron of the Golden Tether and try to avoid trouble. Do not contact us. Do not mention us. We have other ears here, and if we so much as suspect that you're trying to escape or betray us, you will be liquidated. Do you understand, bitch?"
  
  Molly was still trembling, but it was all to be blamed on the cold. Inwardly, there was a fire in her heart and she feared nothing. All she did was nod, and look into the eyes of the two horses that were flanking her contact. They were acting professionally, considering that she was sure they were being paid blood money to both protect her - the asset of the mysterious Kasurian organization - and keep a close eye on her. Passing her own package into the waiting hands of the taller Clydesdale, she said lowly, but audibly: "if I didn't understand I would not have volunteered. Are you going to hand me that purse or not?"
  
  Her contact roughly shoved the purse into her expectant hands, then he stepped forward and slapped her viciously on the face, sending her reeling back only slightly. She stood steady against the wicked backdrop of a heaving dock and the whipping wind, however, her wet hair blowing wildly in that wind as her hood dropped from the violence of the blow. Her tormentor raised his hand again, but then thought better of making a scene on the docks and stepped back. The shorter, obviously less experienced, of the two Clydesdales snorted in surprise at the act, and Molly noted very quickly that he was clearly uncomfortable with having seen such an act. She herself was used to it. It was amazing what someone could get away with while interacting with a person who was not allowed to even acknowledge their abuser's existence. He was good at masking his proclivities, but she had acquired one single scar on her left breast from the voyage over from Kasuria to Guildereim and she would forever remember that night looking at herself in the mirror. Remembering that he had not covered his tracks once, and that one day he would do so again and that would be his undoing.
  
  Sensing the interaction was finished, Molly addressed the shorter one of the guards, the less experienced one. "Is there a room here you'd recommend for me? Come, let's get out of this rain and you can tell me all about this place. Is it true that slaves are pitted against one another in the arena?"
  
  "It... yes," he replied, surprised at having been addressed. "Come along then, I'll brief you on the... on how things work around here." He quickly regained his authoritative tone as he spoke, but Molly was clever, and had already decided that he was going to be a soft mark, and that she would work on him.
  
  Now it was she who walked flanked by the guards, and she did not turn back to look even once again on her associate or his ship. She was still bound by invisible chains to that unnameable thieves guild back in Kasuria and she was still doing their dirty work, but she felt a wave of relief wash over her as they entered the portal that lead to the heart of Guildereim: The Golden Tether. This was a new chapter in her life, one closer to retirement when she could wash her hands of all this business.
  
  But for now, she was going to try and work on her contacts, starting with this Clydesdale. He didn't know it yet, but she wouldn't have to worry about renting a room for a few days; she was going to be using his.
