  Dolly was born and raised in New York, New York. She grew up in a primarily Irish neighborhood and met the love of her life, Declan Foley, there. It was puppy love turned true through the years as they aged together, and he did everything he could to nurture Dolly's vivid imagination and love of adventure. They were married in 1898, when she was 22 years of age and he 28. While he worked at the docks, she maintained their modest home and wrote as a hobby. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to bear children.
  
  When the Great War came in 1914, her husband joined the navy. In 1917, she braved the sea voyage to follow him to his post in France. There she picked up crude French, her tattoos, and her writing personality of "Cassandra Coquette", making a small income off her works to supplement their meager life there. After the end of the war, Dolly and Declan returned to the United States to resume civilian life. In December of 1925, Declan caught influenza and sickened, then passed away despite Dolly's best efforts to nurse him.
